First off, I did enjoy the story overall and must reference the ending in particular. Several people have complained about the ending but I thought it was perfect.
But...so many issues, not least of which is the need for a good proofread to fix the many issues; missing words, grammar errors etc. A particular issue which often led to confusion as to who was talking was the paragraph breaks in the middle of dialogue without distinguished quotation marks, and dialogue from both characters on the same line.I
Another was all the linked websites and pages. Do a list in the front matter of at the end of the book but having them running throughout the story was irritating.
And while I completely understand that fashion was a huge part of the story, in the first half of the book in particular, the name and label dropping was uber excessive and off putting. It is possible to write a story with less specifics.
Again, in the first half of the book, some of the run-on sentences were mind blowing. I appreciated the use of colons and semi-colons but sometimes a full stop (period) is just as effective.
I keep mentioning "the first half" because it does feel like as the book went on, the writing style relaxed. At first I was hit with a feeling of an author trying too hard. To be funny. To be clever.
Other than the grammatical errors, all the issues I've mentioned give an impression of a "pretentious" book which if cleaned up and simplified could be a really great story.
It took me about 9 months to finish. It was somewhat entertaining, but I don’t recommend it. The first half was mind numbing as in boring and kinda of corny. I was OVER all the name drops and found it completely unbelievable that a woman in fashion- an industry dependent on visual marketing- doesn’t know what Instagram is or how to turn on a laptop. She’s been out the game so long, broke as a joke, living in a busted apartment and yet all the high fashion people and models are clamoring for her return… the same lady who doesn’t know what social media is. Ok. It was difficult understanding which character was saying what. The sentence structure was confusing and there are several typos that may require you to read the entire paragraph over to understand. I liked the banter between all the characters, and Darcy particularly cracked me up, but a 40 something year old woman absolutely losing it over a 20 year old boy is ridiculous.
Okay, this book took me awhile to read (a year and a half to be exact). It came highly recommended, but I just couldn't relate to the characters so I gave up shortly after I started it. I'd come back to it here and there, but nothing grabbed my attention, so I'd move on to something else. It started to really annoy me that this book sat unfinished on my kindle, but I couldn't let it go and just mark it DNF. I finally gave it my undivided attention this week and I'm happy I did. It's not the best book, but by the end I was in tears.
The story wasn't bad, but it wasn't great either... it was well written. However, it just seemed flat and I was a little disturbed by the ages difference. Let's not forget judgemental and revengeful Darcy who was too ambitious to be anyone's anything. It was also packed with meaningless information.
I rushed to finish this book because I purchased it and didn't want to waste the money I purchased it with. It was typical chit lit with humor, romance, sex, and some heart moments. I'm slowly moving from the enjoyment of this genre. Decent read, but nothing I would recommend or brag about.
