The Faithfuls is an illuminating study of the nature of privilege in its many forms and asks the question of whether sexual consent is truly given when the power imbalance is so skewed. Cecilia Lyra’s intimate account of the relationship between an employee and the CEO of an iconic American footwear company shows how exploitative and damaging these relationships can be.
This relationship effected not only the two people involved, but their families, the company, and the town of Alma itself. Livelihoods became uncertain, relationships were strained, and people’s sense of identity was shaken.
The seismic upheaval brought on by one woman’s refusal to be silenced becomes a catalyst for positive change within the company of Alma Boots, and the town of Alma itself. The novel ends on a triumphant note, with the women in the story uniting to support each other to overcome the hurt they have suffered and go on to achieve their goals and dreams.
The preview sounded fantastic. Alas, previews always do. That’s how they grab the reader. However, the story went down hill from the moment I hit BUY. The characters were unlikeable, especially Alice. I couldn’t stand her. I had considered returning the book for a refund after her introduction into the story. She just got more unlikeable with each chapter she was in. The story is told from the POV of....too many to name. I like dual points of view. Not the whole town. It was drawn out to the point of boring. The overlapping and retelling was not a plus. And while the reader is led down many wrong trails before the real reveal, the ending didn’t give me the shock value I had hoped for. Overall rating : Disappointment. 2 Stars. ⭐️⭐️
This is a fantastic story with engaging characters. The plot is both timeless and current and I feel like this will be one of those books I will read every now and then just to revisit Alma. The author also wrote The Sunset Sisters, which was my favorite read this summer. Get this book today, but beware: you won't be able to put it down!!!
