This is a fantastic looking game with tons of secrets and collectibles, the music and humour are the best yet from a mario game.
Why 3 stars? Well it loses 1 star for The battle system which is pointless. You get coins for a victory - but unless it’s a perfect win the coin amount is poor and you might spend 500 coins to win 500 coins especially if you use more time.
There is no real incentive to do battles apart from to progress the game. The battles can be fun and the music is great, but I tended to avoid battles because some them were really frustrating.
It loses another star for the price - £50 on release day might be the usual but 3 days later I saw it for £55 and then a week later it was £40 now it’s £43. What’s the point in buying a release day game if a week later it’s £10 off? Yes I got some origami sheets, but I didn’t want them and they are sitting in a draw unopened doing nothing.
A visual delight marred by tedious battle system with no point. No levelling up which gives no motivation to continue battles. There's no point to battling and lining up the enemies is pure drudgery. They ruined it.
I just couldn’t keep myself interested in this game and I loved the old ones. It feels like a chore to play through a lot of it and I didn’t find the puzzles challenging or interesting. It’s visually quite nice to look at, but it’s collecting dust on my shelf now. I was really disappointed.
It's a decent game if you're a fan of this series but it's overly long and by the end I found myself losing interest. Still got a lot of hours out of this so worth the money overall but I doubt I'll ever go back too it.
I will start with saying the Super Paper Mario on the Wii was 1000 times better. This is boring in comparison, the storyline is a bit odd and forced. I liked the touch of having to find the toads but the fighting dynamic with enemies was infuriating, makes everything so slow. Kids will probably enjoy it though.
