I’ve been playing this game nonstop since release, and overall do think it’s a good game. Everything from the driving to chipping to putting is all pretty great. Ball striking overall is very good, and varied. You can change your stances, ball angels, and buy a decent amount of new clubs. Putts are challenging, and reading the green and draining a 40 yarder is very satisfying.
Now besides gameplay, there’s not much depth to the game.
There’s a myplayer mode, where you can either start in the majors or in amateurs and work your way up, and play tournaments, but I was very disappointed to see there’s no player attributes, meaning you don’t upgrade your players stats. This may be the only sports game I’ve seen that doesn’t have stats for players, very bizarre.
Online is fine. It’s 1v1, 2v2 or 1-4s. Difficulty is stuck at PRO, so there's a lot of bad people who are playing it, who can't control their shots, and just leave after 1-3 holes( people leave the match about 60% of the time if not more) Theres also "Societies". which is like an online franchise, that you and your friends can play a season together.
Graphics are also on the poorish end. While they aren’t bad, they aren’t 2020 graphic standard good.
Also, one of the big additions I’m in this game over Golf Club is real PGA golfers in the game, but its really just a gimmick as you can't play with them. Not online, not offline, nowhere. You can only use your created player. They are simply just there on the leaderboards, and to rival against in myplayer. Very strange. I want to play online matches with Buffy Bryson!
Overall it’s a good game fundamentally, it’s just missing an it factor to be great.
I have seen better graphics and game play on the last PGA EA sports version from 2015. For a 2020 release the game is very visually dissapointing.. also, the announcers are terrible, golf courses are limited and what really sucks is there is no monetary winnings, it is completely devoid of any realism of the PGA tour. They made buying clubs a very tedious and idiotic process, options for your player profile are seriously limited the game is just so ridiculous and a waste of time... keep your prior version, don't waste your money.
The local head-to-head play does work at all, you can't watch online opponents play, the announcer gets the score and wind direction wrong frequently. Complaints to the maker result in a flurry of emails back and forth that end with "that is a known bug and we are working on it." How a company can sell a multiuser game that is not very multiuser is a mystery.
Addendum. After a dozen emails back and forth, their request for photos and videos, the company finally admitted that it actually cannot play head to head and requires a console for EACH PLAYER unless the second player is an anonymous guest.
Pros: - Fun, addicting game play - Detailed golf simulation. Can shape shots, add spin and choose shot types. Putting is challenging yet satisfying - Highly customizable difficulty levels ensure everyone can play with the appropriate level of challenge
Cons: - If they're going to acquire PGA licensing and stick Justin Thomas on their cover, you better be able to play as Justin Thomas, or at the very least be able to play directly against him. The fact that you can do neither, with any of the pros, is borderline false advertising. - Game lacks any meaningful player progression. No way to improve player stats either directly or through clubs/gear upgrades - Graphics are seriously lacking for 2020. Courses are OK, but players are blocky and awkward.
Overall I feel that the quality of golf (which is why you buy this game in the first place) carries this title to a respectable rating despite its flaws. Good starting point for the franchise, and if they'd flesh out some of the game modes and player progression and add the ability to play as the pros (along with a graphic overhaul) this series has the potential to be one of golfs best.
I got my game yesterday and WAS excited after playing the 2019 version. The load times for the screens game play are intractable! It even froze up at one point and I had to exit and restart the game. The spinning circle of frustration for 3 to 5 minutes totally unacceptable. Hopefully, there will be a fix for this in the near future. As of now I wouldn't recommend buying this game.
Having this game for almost a week now and playing it a lot, it is a very fun game. The game play of it is very enjoyable and takes some skill to get good at making shots. However, it just needs some more features. I wish you could edit your players stats like hit power, aim, control, etc. All you do is buy different clubs to "upgrade" your game. The bad part is the basic clubs they give you are better than most of the clubs you can buy and they are just generic no name clubs which makes no sense. I have not played online but local multiplayer is enjoyable and easy. It does take a lot of time to buy things for your golfer even if you win tournaments in career mode. It is a fun golf game but if you're looking for a NBA 2K or Madden myplayer experience you will be disappointed with its depth.
