If I could give the game 3.5 stars I would. The game runs horribly, the load times are long, I had it crash on me twice throughout my entire playthrough, and the side quests arent a ton of fun to do or give out good rewards compared to Deadly Premonition Origins. Story-wise its also paced far slower than the first game. It's got tons of problems for sure, and yet the game just oozes with charm and I loved the story and characters. The game is simultaneously better and worse than the first game in some areas, and it's a tough sell for someone unfamiliar with DP1 and just wants a neat mystery game to play on the Switch. And yet as someone that loved Deadly Premonition 1 on 360, warts and all, I still loved my time with the sequel. If you're still on the fence, I'd recommend waiting for a sale or for news on patches. If you unironically loved Deadly Premonition 1, then you'll have yourself a good time, just be aware that this is a likable but very flawed game though.
I did not have high hopes for this game going into it. Sequels are never as good as the originals; I was just happy Swery was giving us a sequel. I came out thoroughly pleased! I didn’t think I would care about any of the new characters the way I cared about the original cast, yet I found myself delighted and emotionally invested in their stories. I will say it starts out dry, but so did the first game. The shooting has improved and the Otherworld segments can feel tedious if you’re the type of player that likes to explore every nook and cranny like myself (by the end I didn’t bother to go back for items). Combat/enemies aren’t difficult; I guess Swery knows that most players are here for the story so he didn’t really try to make anything too challenging. My only complaint is that side missions don’t really advance the plot the way they did in the first game, and the rewards for them are disappointing. At the end of the day, it felt like I was experiencing the first game all over again, glitches and all! Highly recommend to fans of the original.
I want to get this out of the way first. Although the first game wasn't even that pretty and was notorious for performance issues, at least one of the port switch runs tolerably. This game not only looks ugly but runs poorly almost everywhere all the time. If you want to trudge pasty that like the first game, there might be an interesting story behind it. I've still yet to get more than 5 hours in but so far the performance and visual issues are outweighing the story to the point it becomes a slog. The price tag isn't great either. As you could probably find some better games like crypt of the necro dancer for the same or even lower price.
Again another Birthday gift for my youngest son. He will have hours and hrs of fun playing his Nintendo switch .Cuz he loves the challenge of a good game.He never trades them in. And has a large collection for all the different machines out There.
I previously wrote a review after 2 days of playing the game. It's now been 4 days and I've finished it, so my review is going to be heavily edited from the original version. This review does not have spoilers, but it does go into some of the flow of the overall game.
Deadly Premonition is probably my favorite game ever made and I’m a huge fanatic of Twin Peaks. I was thrilled to hear there would be a sequel and I pre-ordered on Amazon.
The story rotates between events that occurred in 2005, pre first-game, and current day (2019). The current day events, which start off the game, are sometimes tedious and there's a character introduced that is almost immediately unlikeable. It does give backstory to everything that happened, but it just takes a long time to get there without much action.
There are considerably less otherworld sequences this time around, but I found them to be pretty easy and one of them goes on FOREVER.
I wish they included some actual puzzles in the game. There's a task that has to be done towards the end that requires figuring out a code, and I thought to myself 'Wow actually something to do!' only to be told in the dialogue exactly what the code is that needs to be entered. Some of the other tasks are very back and forth around town and they aren't the most exciting. To be honest, I had more fun with some of the mini-games than I did with a lot of the required tasks, but make no mistake: some of the side quests are ridiculously lame and repetitive, and the rewards are nothing that will really advance you in the game or make you want to take out the extra time to complete them. There was one point early on where I had to rotate between sleeping for 24 hours and grabbing something to eat for *5 days straight* just to get to a certain day of the week to complete a required mission.
The profiling that required you to find several different clues in the first game is gone. Now it's literally just clicking from item to item (all marked) within a segment to paint a picture and do the profiling. No more being chased down the hall by a hooded figure in a raincoat. No more quick-hitting of buttons on the controller to dive and divert attacks.
The first day of the 2005 segment forces you to walk everywhere within the city. It's not a huge city, but it isn't for the impatient. This switches by the second episode, but it's still tedious at points.
The graphics are pretty much the same as they were in the first game. At points (so far), I’d venture to say they are even a step below the first game. The entire beginning sequence looks like it belongs in the Archer TV show (that kind of cartoon quality) and some of the other cutscenes so far have a lesser quality than the first game in my opinion, but that wasn't going to get in the way of enjoying the game-- if it was good.
Be warned that the graphics can still get *very* choppy while running around the town. I played the Origins remaster for Switch and I had several instances of it completely crashing. It didn't happen to me this time, but I would save often because there were several times where everything slowed way down to the point I was sure the system was going to shut down.
There is a known issue during otherworld sequence which deems your gun completely inaccessible and the only way to fix it is to reload the game from an earlier save point or take damage from the enemy. It's a bug and I'm sure it will be addressed in an update. I also had an issue with loading my game from saves - a few times it would only be a black screen and I could hear myself walking around, but no picture. The system likes to create a bunch of 'Auto' saves and even though it's annoying to look at, it actually worked here because my Manual saves were all having the same error and not loading a picture.
The mechanics are still a little off. I had a car pass me at one point and then just vanish off the screen a second later. I had two cars smash into me, and they came out of nowhere (and did next to no damage to my health anyways). Same with people walking around. They seem to show up out of nowhere. There’s always a slight pause/freeze in the game whenever you open a door. The lips of the characters sometimes don’t move at all while they are talking, and other times they don’t match up with what is being said. The same opening an old creaky door sound and the same ‘walking on a tile floor’ noise is carried over from the first game, as is a lot of the same music. There are some new soundtrack entries that are really catchy- I think that's actually a high point.
The story itself is an interesting one, but there are less characters to follow meaning less suspects, and the whole thing gets confusing towards the end. I didn't expect anything less, but I do have some big questions about the believability or logic of some of it. I won't spoil any of it here, but I really think it's a head-scratcher when all is finished.
I played the game on and off for 4 days, and finished only having died one time. There is no difficulty level to set, and I found even the final battles to be incredibly easy. I also found that I could run through some scenes with a lot of the otherworld enemies and I received no damage at all. Maybe in later versions the difficulty level will be increased- and seeing how lacking the story is at points, I think that could help.
I love Deadly Premonition, but I was expecting a lot more from this game to be honest.
If you want a rock solid frame rate or the highest Fidelity graphics and animation money can buy at this time deadly premonition 2 is not for you.
If you however want a Bizarre B-movie of a game that's as fun and weird as watching the second and third Evil Dead movies (with only a slight dash of tedious side quests), then I highly recommend you take a trip into DePre2 and rejoin FBI special agent Francis York Morgan (and Zack) as they travel down to the low frame rate southern US town of Le Carre (the square) and tangle with the family who practically owns everything therein.
The storyline that apes a few greats like true detective with a dash of surrealism and psudo lovecraftism you'll remember fondly if you played the original to completion. Hidetaka Suehiro makes good on his promises of adding a bike (or skateboard) and showering and compared to the original there is less horrible in model clipping that made York's closed eyes and smile so charmingly unnerving, and most characters are not wholly repugnant to look at, but Swery's budget Kojima like tendencies still shine all the same.
Buy it if you're a fan of the original, and don't ask about Zack, that's a... private matter.
This is not a triple A game. The fun in this game lies in how offbeat and weird it is. It's incredibly charming. The first one is heavily inspired by Twin Peaks and this one is just more of them same (which is a very good thing).
The map/game world is smaller than in the first. Which is good for a sometimes portable game. The first game's map was big and empty. This one is smaller but more full.
These are more complaints about the switch than the game itself: the framerate is bad. I've heard it was worse and it better now that it's been patched but it's still not great. And the joycons drifting all over the place make it very difficult to play. But that's Nintendo's fault - not DP2.
I wish they'd port this to a more powerful system with a better framerate because it's a great game. Maybe a little short. I do hope they make part 3.
Oh but you will be a little lost if you haven't played the first one. The first one is also available on switch so give it a try. Or if you're really not interested at least read up a quick plot summary of the first one - otherwise there's going to be some really strange aspects to the game that won't make much sense (and even knowing the story you'll still be left wondering what a lot of stuff was haha) but that's part of the charm of this game.
