This is an excellent programming book. It contains some of the best explanations I have ever encountered of some very complex topics. I read it cover to cover. I would hope this author continues to write many more books. Highly recommended for anyone with an interest in Linux System Programming, Concurrency, IPC and OOP.

5,0 de 5 estrelas Recomended. But need some C background.

I’m halfway the book and so far is great. After reading all the chapters regarding OOP in C I have a better understanding of how other languages work with inheritance, polymorphism, and overloading. If the rest of the book is this good, then it’s a solid 5 out of 5. The book is big and heavy, difficult to read in bed but you will manage.

The photo is from last week. The book reads very easily. Other codebooks force you to sit in front of the computer and try stuff, the code here is very simple. No need a compiler to understand what’s happening.

This is not a beginner's book. Aims to improve your knowledge about the language it's not introductory material. Start with something simple before reading it, as the videos of Jacob Sorber on youtube. This book has a similar mood.

*Update after finishing the book*

I finished the book and I totally recommend it. Again, not for beginners. Helps to understand concepts like fences in the chapters about concurrency and parallelism.

This book explains key concepts to understand other publications like "A primer on memory consistency and cache coherence" or "Linux device drivers".

The part about networking it's kind of boring compared to the rest of the book. But it goes back on track when talking about integrating C with other languages.

This is a book that will help you to understand not only C but how other languages work since show you how to implement OOP or Mutexes in the lower level.

Be aware that this book is strongly Linux based. The chapters on multithread do it best to show how to make them work on Mac, but due to the nature of the ecosystem, it's not as timeless as the Linux code.

Bin, was dieses Buch angeht, so ein wenig hin und her gerissen:

Positiv:
+ Gibt einen guten Gesamtüberblick

Negativ

5,0 de 5 estrelas The best and cheapest programming book ever made.

I was not expecting to receive such a huge book : 800 big pages (no cheat, no wasted spaces).

Normally when I buy a programming book only 1-3 subjects are actually interesting (stack frame, assembly floating points, colision detection) and everything else is just good to read. This book is different : absolutely everything is interesting. It contains all the hidden programming techniques that old C programmers knows that has been either lost or never been shared. Most people don't know that the first C++ compilers were actually compiling to C first. This books covers modern programming techniques (that are actually as old as computer programming in reality : Assembly programmers always used struct and a form of object oriented programming). With this book, you can finally have the arguments to destroy the myths about C and OO.

Object oriented programming is a SCAM and a LIE that caused more problems than it actually solve in reality. You can't reuse OO code most of the time, because when you need 1 tree, you have to bring the forest with it. Programming in C offer another way to think, it opens the mind to wider horizons. C is freeing yourself from the OO programming mind prison and all the intellectual mast..bation and fancy wording that amount to bad design and slower execution. Inheritance can be good, but modern use of it only amount to never knowing who does what or code can never be debuged.

The good thing is that this book explain in great details how to do everything that C++ and Above can do and how to do them in C (not that it is always a good idea). So now when some cluless millenials (who are actually scripter and not real programmers) try to trash talk C like it is some kind of Boomer language, you can put them back where they belong : at the bottom of the stack (or better enlighten them).

This book also teach you to program like a real man : no cancerous IDE that constatly annoys you and reformat your code. Now, you will actually understand how things are really working. No stones have been left unturned in this book. Everything you could ever need, you will find a way to do it with C.

There is a resurgence in C programming interest for the same reason the youth are finding a way to rebel by investigating conservative ideologies of the past. Who control the past, control the future.

C is now a rebel language, it is like riding a superbike. C is really dangerous if you don't know what you do, but it is so much more powerful, elegant and rewarding. Working with C will make you a better programmer in any other language.

In a world of sanboxing, safety first and chaining you to a specific platform or SDK. C is a liberation from all these OS prisons. With C you can do more than any other language. You can even compile C to web assembly and run it in a browser.

If you have a passion for programming and how OS are made, you need this book. Your first C book should be the original : "C Programming Language (2nd Edition)" by the guys who actually invented C.

Remember that C++ was created to provide jobs for mediocre programmers. Also, programming languages like Python, Java, Swift, Kotlin, C#, PHP were created to lower the need for good programmers, lower the wages, create a brainless army of code monkeys and slow things down so you constantly have to upgrade your CPU and RAM.

5,0 de 5 estrelas Well though-out book. Every chapter has great content.

This is an excellent book, that will teach you much more than C programming.
So many programming books cover the latest libraries or framework, but very few of them capture (at least for me) the magic and mystery of computers, and why they are interesting in the first place.
As some of the other reviews state, this book is deep, has lots of content, is well though-out, and just the right kind of nerdy.
All in all, this is a great book for C programmers, but also for programmers who want to dig a little deeper into how computers actually work.

Disorganized disaster. I don't like negative reviewing anyone's hard work, however this was rushed, the content lacks diagrams and full fledged quality code. The section on concurrency lacked extensive detail. Horrid.
