Loved Civilization Revolution on PS3, I started off with the demo, liked it so I got the game. Civ Rev was easy to learn, and I managed to work my way up to a few wins on Deity (the hardest setting). When Civ 6 was announced for PS4 I was pretty excited and pre-ordered my copy right away. The graphics are great, but the game is insanely hard. I can't even get a win on Settler (the easiest setting). I am in the lead right up to a few rounds before the game ends, and somehow I end up losing. What's worse is that there is no guide, and the in-game tutorial is very poorly done. There is a detailed "manual" online which should have been included with the game. The game is very complex. I'm still trying to improve, but it's not easy. I thought the easiest setting would be just that, but it's not. You have to be very patient and ready to lose. A lot. I can't believe they released it on Nintendo Switch before PS4 and XBOX. Also the fact that the dlc is so expensive is not cool - I mean the game's been out for about 3 years on PC. ***1/2 Update 12/10/2019 - Finally managed to get a Culture win on Settler a couple of days ago, it felt great! Bumping it up to Chieftain, after doing some reading online I have a bit better understanding of how it works. Adding half a star to my initial review.
I'm a huge Civ fan been playing since the '90s.... I was hoping for something as fun as Civ Revolution was on the PS3, boy was I disappointed. I'm looking for functional play such as scrolling from city to city with the L1-R1 buttons, nope not an option. I don't like the building of encampments, campus's, entertainment district.
Game seems great, and I'm glad it finally came to PS4. However, if I'm paying $60, I expect the menus not to be cut off because you can't adjust the screen size for some reason. I noticed this within 2 hours of playing the game - why wasn't this corrected? Also, this seems rather difficult even on the very easiest setting.
It would be nice if turn times were instantaneous, but maybe that's too much to ask for. This is a complicated game and has steep learning curve and no instruction book. After playing a few times, I believe I have the basics down, and look forward to years of play.
If you like strategy games and want to spend 2-4 hours on one, this is it. If you slow the time down to half or a 1/4 then the advances in technology are slower and more realistic. The maps are awesome. Game play and graphics are great. The only thing I don't like is that the computer simulated countries do not suffer the same fate of rebellion that you do when citizens get upset. I took over a city and then it rebelled right away.... The rebellion thing is my only complaint, there's not a lot of warning, and somehow the rebels can get better weapons and more of them than you have, which doesn't make any logistical sense at all. That's my only complaint.
The Civilization series is a great game franchise and I highly recommend it to anyone interested in a good empire builder. This includes the base game and does not include any DLC, however there are a few free packs on the playstation store. The package came with the disk loose however, but luckily nothing was scratched. As far as the game they have a couple new leaders and civilizations that differ from the last games.
Really enjoy this game, love the platform, change of maps, variety of characters, and ease of use. Only downside is that on other maps, the game can lag to some extent, but typically on standard maps it does just fine.
I have played several versions of this game and it continues to get more detailed in what you have to do. With more options there are more outcomes you can end up with which makes it more interesting when playing the game. If your a fan of the game then I think you will be very pleased with this version of the game. The only downfall is they squeeze extra money out of you for the extra contents which do give it a better experience but is not needed to still enjoy the game.
