I recommend playing Death Mark before playing NG if you have not. If you enjoyed Death Mark, you will enjoy this game. I completely love the atmosphere and the jumpscares! The story is interesting and I never wanted to put the game down. I hope there's another part of this game!
This game is a horror visual novel, set in the same universe as Death Mark and with a similar premise. A young man is cursed by supernatural forces to stop malevolent spirits, in order to prevent his death. He is aided by several companions, who also risk their lives in finding out the mystery behind each spirit.
There really isn't all that much difference between the first game and this one. The main differences are that the player character has much more of a personality and backstory this time around, and the brief fan service shots from the first game are gone. There is also an optional side quest, in which you are texted clues to find information in the specific areas in the game. This latter part clashes a bit with the game, but also gives more info on the events of the previous game. The main character has a particular psychic power which adds a little difference to clue gathering, which is a nice touch.
However virtually everything else is the same. You still go through chapters one at a time, each with different spirits, trying to find items and use them in the correct order to advance the plot and defeat the spirits. You still have brief "danger" segments in which you choose the correct option from out of three or get a "game over," although you can just retry right away anyways. The art is the same highly detailed, dark/gothic style as the first one, and you progress through the game's maps in the same first person view.
These are all good elements for the most part, however the game feels way too similar to the first one if you've played it before. They didn't really address the flaws of it, mainly that much of it is trial and error that isn't always intuitive. Mostly you just fail the encounter till you find the single sequence to beat it, either the good one or bad one, and it repeats till the end of the game.
This isn't to say it's a bad game. It does what it does well, and the added characterization makes it a slight improvement over the first game. I am a little more partial to the first one's setting though. The main issue is that it's so similar that it's a little harder to keep interest this time around. If you haven't played the first one, add one or two stars to my rating. However it may be a little too close to the original for its own good.
I played this on a Switch Lite if that matters... After the second or third chapter I noticed that the music didn't stop when you tried again after failing during a boss fight. This means that the previous song overlapped the new copy of the same song. As far as I can tell, there is no limit to the number of layered songs and it becomes a noisy mess. At the later "Demon" chapter, the game jumps in between rooms and the music can overlap there too. Basically, I was only able to normally play the game for about the first chapter and then the mood never calms down from the boss fight until I save, exit, and reload my game. It also seems really hard to save in this game, because you have to wait for people to stop talking to access the save menu. As far as the story and gameplay goes, I liked the first one and I like this one too. I also like that NG has little to no fan service, since the first one always put its female victims in torn and scanty outfits, which seemed pointless to me.
