Storyline is as amateur as they get. You'll spend hours furiously tapping 'A' to get through unending dialog about how Sonic and Mario are stuck in a retro game. This weak premise is repeated over and over until you decide to abandon the campaign mode altogether and just play the mini games. The mini games themselves are pretty fun. I loved rock climbing, swimming, martial arts.
I bought this game because I thought it would be like Mario and Sonic at the Olympic Winter Games (one of my favorite Wii games). I was badly mistaken and disappointed. I should've done my research. But that is not the only reason I disliked the game. After completing Story Mode, there is no replayability for this one. I haven't tried Multiplayer but I have no interest to. Many of the minigames were aggravating to me, and the story dragged badly it feels like (you go through 20 chapters, but some does feel filler).
I will point out a few positives though. I didn't expect that I would learn tons of facts about both Mario and Sonic characters, present Tokyo and Tokyo '64. There is not much to explore in Story Mode besides just completing the minigames, but I did read all of the facts they presented me with and I learned a few things.
One star because I enjoyed a few of the games. The other star because the dialogue was witty. I can't say I hated this game, but did I enjoy playing that much? Not really. Will I replay it? Probably not.
I bought this to play with my group of friends. We all recently got Switches and we've been having a lot of fun doing a bunch of local multiplayer games. I always liked playing the Olympic games with friends on previous Nintendo consoles, so when I found this on sale for $35 here on Amazon I jumped on it. Unfortunately I'm a little disappointed. There are a lot of events which is nice, but they're all around two minutes long and there's no way to queue them up or do a tournament etc which means more time is spent setting up each event then actually playing stuff. Even in events like Surfing when two out of four people go at once, you only get one turn and you don't get to play against the other opponent. Also, we all had a really hard time using the controls for many of the events using motion controls. I'd say if you can get this on sale for $15 or $20 at some point it'd probably be worth it, but it's definitely not worth $50 or $60 as you'll usually find it.
It is really hard to believe that the same company that produce masterpieces like Breath of the Wild also released this boring, lackluster, crapfest.
Too much boring dialogue Poor controls Too few events Money grab that abuses the franchise while exploiting the Olympics. Sad to see Nintendo release such a subpar game. My family was robbed the a midget plumber in red overalls
The game is pretty weak overall. There is very little control in a lot of the mini games, mostly one button gameplay. It’s probably good for little kids, but not quite as fun for adults. I would skip this one unless it’s for your little ones.
