Firstly, let me say that my game arrived in perfect condition and in a rimely manner. That being said, this game is... flawed.
I'd like to begin by saying that I took my time with this game and did every single quest available. I beat this game in 27 hours. For a single-player RPG, 27 hours is nothing. For a 60 dollar single-player RPG, 27 hours is insulting. I want the record to show that I pre-ordered this game and desperately wanted to love it.
I'm goimg to go through the pros and cons of this game and you can decide for yourself whether it's helpful.
Pros: -Unique gimmick (unrestrained corporatist dystopian future in a wild west space frontier) -Better roleplaying than FO4 -It's a complete game (no day 1 dlc, no microtransactions) -s Story stands on its own and wraps up conclusively -Every NPC except 1 (I think) is killable -There's a few genuinely funny moments (by genuinely funny, I mean not something cringe like Marvel quips)
Cons: -Limited weapons and armor selection (especially armor) -A lot of weapons and armor are completely pointless. I experimented with almost every weapon and armor type and found no reason not to run around in heavy armor and use a 2h pulse hammer, plasma rifle, and shock cannon. The sniper rifle had some niche usage -The most powerful weapon variants are unavailable until the literal last moments of gameplay -Lackluster companions with weak stories. The only interesting one is Vicar Max -There is one "boss" battle in the entire game and calling it a boss battle is generous -Rushed ending, boring midgame -Lackluster confrontations with main villains (ties into that rushed ending) -Lackluster handling of main villains (you don't even know who the main antagonist is until the last quarter of the game and then it completely mishandles that villain) -Inferior roleplaying to New Vegas -Clunky gunplay that even time dilation couldn't save -Runs poorly on XB1 -No reason to max out any specialization. You can comfortably beat the game by getting almost everything to 50. -There's like 6 enemy types with little variation between those enemies -Since there's only 6 enemy types, they're obnoxiously overused. You will quickly get bored of killing humans, the three or so robot variants, raptidons, primals, and the three types of mantisaur -Weak character customization but it hardly matters because there's no third person anyways -Settlements/cities are sparsely populated, with nothing to do in them but run back and forth between quests -Unacceptably long loading screens for a 2019 game (which ties into my previous and next points) -Quests will often send you running between planets and places on those planets that will see you through a dozen loading screens by the time you complete the quest. A good portion of time is spent on loading screens
Ultimately, this game is a big disappointment and should cost 40 bucks at most for what you're getting. A shame, because Obsidian is a great studio. The game is playable and it's "complete" but it's obvious this game could have been (and was likely meant to be) so much more.
It's not the best choice and it's definitely not this gamer's choice.
Story is dull overall. Same ending as the techomancer almost. Two companions make the game incredibility easy no matter difficulty. I love Obsidian but they really didnt deliver with this game. Hopefully more writers next game they make.
Awesome new game. Visuals aren’t amazing and can sometimes feel lacking. It’s open rpg with lots of options and events. There is a massive glitch towards the end of the game that causes it to crash repeatedly and has prevented completion. No patches have been put through.
Not bad, not really good either, great concept though. They put a lot into the “makers of fallout new Vegas” vibe but somehow didn’t follow though. Only character with any amount of development and draw was that Pavarti chick.
