Okay so the good stuff, the helmet, cassette tape, steelbook, and lithos are all fantastic. I am very satisfied with the build quality and the helmet definitely feels like you could wear it comfortably if you want to frag demons wearing that thing.
The bad stuff, I can't play the game! So the initial install instructions were flawed because they said to add the game to origin games which obviously is incorrect since the game isn't even on Origin. You can however add your code to bethesda.net which I did. The problem is, as soon as I did that it showed in my transaction history but the game itself is not loaded on the launcher. I can't actually play the game.
I gave this 2 stars because the addons are great, took 3 away because I can't actually use the product!
while I love the physical products shipped in box there was however a pretty glaring issue in that the fact that directly from the steel book the cardboard disc placed in the case had a code which was entirely invalid with it both providing an error on Bethesda.net and being labelled as invalid by the launcher without once being acknowledged
The helmet is great, the fact I cant play what I paid for is not on such a level
The contents for the Deluxe Edition are pretty good, I really love the helmet that comes with it. Game-play wise the game is good but then you will notice all at the very end is just a collection of interconnected arenas with a more or less good story to tie them together. Some characters that were important in Doom 2016 story rarely show up or talk at all. There is a lot of back story missing here (Samuel Hayden, VEGA are a very good examples).
Art wise Doom 2016 is better and the environments felt more appropriate for the story, game levels looked more like you were in facility located at another planet. Some areas in Doom Eternal are too "clean" and rather simple. An example are the menus in the in game terminals. In Doom 2016 the place was a bloodbath and when in a room you immediately know that a fight took place previously.
The reason I am giving 2 star review is for:
Cons: - The soundtrack is not that good (in game music is actually way better) - Some game content is locked behind Twitch Prime. Currently there are screenshots showing that the game developer wanted that with master levels but they stepped back on that decision. Problem is that we don not know if they will do it in the future. This mess with the value of the Collectors Edition and makes me wonder why the hell I need to pay for another subscription to have access to all game content? Two hundred bucks is not enough? - Anti Cheat Denuvo. Lots of people are currently having issues with the game right now. Is optional? No. If you want to play single player campaign you need to have it installed even tho they said it was just for Battlemode (multiplayer part of the game). If you remove it the game won't launch and will ask to install it. A Ring 0 kernel driver that has more privileges than the owner of the computer. This is a very serious security risk for your computer and information in it - That type of dark humor found on Doom 2016 is mostly missing in Doom Eternal - Not sure is me, but I found that some enemy character models are not detailed as the ones in Doom 2016 - Latest patch broke part of the enemy AI. Pain Elemental getting stuck, how Marauders behave are good examples - Key provided is for Bethesda Store and not for Steam. Lets be honest Bethesda launcher just cover the basics and its not good - No cloud save option
Pros: - Game is well optimized, loading times are way shorter than original - Performance is better (well... was until they introduced Denuvo Anti Cheat and some bugs) - Well balanced - Fun to play - New game dynamics - In game music is the best
I hope they improve this, until then the overall ranting remains two stars.
I bought the collector's edition of the 2016 Doom and didn't exactly leave a glowing review on steam. And now I have spent another $200 on another collectors edition and am disappointed once again. I can't help myself, I grew up with Doom, and it will always be the all time best video game ever conceived. But the people attempting to bring it into our current times have failed us. Firstly, the story has been changed completely. It was perfect before, and if something ain't broke, you don't fix it. To hell with all this new drama. Second. "The Dance" that the devs have been all over social media gushing about is garbage. I am only a few hours in, but may not play any further, so I'll have to judge it by what I've seen so far. This is an arena shooter with bots in tight spaces. With tons of environmental damage. It sucks. Run around in circles, jump and double jump and double dash and swing off monkey bars while demons chase you and you can either turn around to elimanate the ones chasing you and get stuck against something, or fall off the edge of something and die; or you can keep looking forward and just hope the demon you want to kill happens into your field of view. Who the hell decided Doom marine was half ballet dancer and half gymnast? Speaking of which, Third. Maybe the most egregious sin of all. Having platform jumping around flaming spinning bars and dodging flaming projectiles shooting out of the walls. Yes. They stole level design from super Mario bros. I have yet to find the princess at the end of a level. Maybe she is in another castle? Everyone who was involved in the decision to add this garbage to Doom will certainly burn in hell for it. Fourthly. Ah hell I give up. On the game and this review.
