This is my first negative review if I remember correctly.
Bought this for my Audio Technica AT2020 XLR. From the first day I received this, my mic would end up sounding robotic or as if I was in a tube. This was in discord and OBS for the record. This would happen regularly after a few hours of use. I tried every fix under the sun, nothing helped.
Just googling 'focusrite scarlett solo mic distortion' will give you hundreds of results all with a similar issue to mine. This seems to be a driver issue/compatibility issue and its been a problem with focusrite products for years by the looks of things.
Eventually I gave up and opted to return it and get the komplete audio 1 which is £20 cheaper and for the past week as of writing this review has had no issues at all.
I would recommend against the scarlett solo. It looks and sounds great when it does work but within a few hours theres a good chance it'll just stop working.
Oh goodness... this apparently famed box of tricks was such a pain. I even wrote a complaint to Focusrite about how bad this unit is. I'm an IT engineer and software developer by trade. The drivers on this thing are PANTS! In fact, I had my first Blue screen of death (like EVER!) on my Win10 PC after installing these drivers and software! Worse than that, the software is so unintuitive and quirky. Sheesh! Straight back to Amazon with a new found wisdom - that is... STOP BELIEVING YOUTUBE REVIEWS OF HOW GOOD THIS IS - BECAUSE IT IS NOT!! To be fair, Focusrite did get back in touch and apologized for the experience I had and also took on board the many points I made to them. They may well get their act together on the next release.
So bye bye Focusrite....
...and hello Komplete Audio 1:
Komplete Audio 1 - what was the difference? 1. Actually BETTER noise floor - yes! true! On max gain, imperceptible in any way really whereas the focusrite had hiss. 2. Unit was connected, drivers & s/w added, zero issues - it all just works perfectly. 3. DAW pick it up perfectly too. 4. Cheaper by approx £20!
Focusrite Scarlett Solo 3rd Gen USB Audio Interface 99.40 I purchased the Focusrite mainly because i was having problems with the Behringer UMC2o2HD and much of the annoyance of that interface was a hiss which is constantly there no matter what is plugged In or unplugged other than headphones or speakers. I had read a mixed bag reviews on the Focusrite scarlet solo I thought I would get one and compare the two for noise and then whichever one was the best I'd keep one or the other.
Well it came out the Focusrite solo was the one I'd be returning mostly through shear frustration that really the manufacturer has not done enough to make this an easy install., Now I will say with all honesty that I may have had a duff unit so I'm not saying that all the solo Focusrites will be a problem for everyone. But having said that my particular unit i would be using this as an interface for guitar and would be running this through not a Daw at the moment as I have another interface running through a DAW in another studio and no problems with that set up at all. So i was using an application JamVox 3 or Guitar Rig 5. I downloaded the drivers and installed both drivers including the USB driver just in case. I checked that this interface was combatable with My machine which is running Windows 8 64 bit which it stated it was. So, after install as specified the USB light was lit up telling there was a sound connection, I checked and yes there was guitar and music, but the guitar sounded as though it wasn't connected to my applications jam vox or Guitar rig, the sound was still clean like its coming from a small amp a dry signal rubbish sound. No matter what I did, deleted all drivers re downloaded drivers with unit not hooked up, then reconnected and as before all lights, the device is displayed in both my devices but sound as it was before. This had cost me about three to four hours to get this to work but no luck. My particular unit no I was not giving it anymore time and contacting the company was not going to help in my case, this unit had already wasted enough of my time an absolute pig’s ear to set up. Maybe it was faulty, anyway unless the manufacturer was willing to give me another one to trial than this review really isn’t up to much in helping anyone to decide do they want to try their luck as there does seem to be a little confrontation with the Behringer UMC2o2HD but what has to be said about Behringer once you installed their driver their unit functioned as it should but have this hiss, but it is something I can take out of any final recording and at least I know the noise is not actually in the signal so it won't be bound to any guitar effect I use, but something I suppose I’ll live with until it really p me off or am unable to remove it. Practically the Behringer worked out of the box.
I have been recording for many years and decided to upgrade my audio interface. After watching a ton of reviews, I decided on this. Bad move. The sound quality of the scarlet solo headphone outlet is really poor. If you are using an onboard default soundcard, I'm sure it will be ok. I use a hi spec soundcard installed into my PC. The sound is excellent. Moving over to the Solo is like night and day. The solo ouput is really poor in comparison. So if you are looking for an new Audio Interface, and you are using an upgrade to the stock PC card, go elasewhere this is not for you.
I am extremely disappointed by the lack of customer support I have received from Focusrite.
I first contacted Focusrite four weeks ago by email telling them the instrument input on the unit was not working and asking how to return it under guarantee.
I then received a response a full week later from an agent, who spent the next two weeks going through troubleshooting steps with me. I completed the steps without complaint.
When none of them worked, he gave me a label for sending it back and a link to arrange collection on the USPS website. However, I had issues selecting the delivery type, so emailed him asking for assistance. That was a week ago now and I haven't had a relevant update from the company since. All I want is to send back the unit in exchange for one that works and am frankly disgusted that it's taken this long.
UPDATE: After leaving this review and informing the company that I had done so, I was contacted by a new person from Focusrite, who was extremely helpful and finally helped me to return the unit for a new one. After receiving the new one, I found I was still having the same issue. I supposed at this point that the issue was not a hardware fault with the device, but as Focusrite themselves had originally told me that's what it seemed to be, I resolved to just look on online forums for a fix for my issue instead.
However, a few days after the unit arrived, the agent who had helped me return the device (Laurence) actually reached out to me proactively to check that I was getting on ok with the new one, which I was very impressed with. I told him I was still having the issue and he contacted me by phone and immediately fixed it. It turned out to be very simple fix: for anyone else having the problem, when you have an instrument connected you must have Input 2 selected in GarageBand. I am not sure on how to update my review, as considering that the fix was so simple I think the first person I spoke to should have been able to suggest it to me, rather jumping to a hardware fault immediately and having me send back a perfectly sound unit. However, I am very grateful to Laurence for his help and proactiveness. If I had any feedback for Focusrite, it would be to try and be more responsive and also to get staff trained more in troubleshooting common/simple queries that come up, considering that many of your customers may be using these softwares for the first time and these sorts of things might not seem obvious to them.
My system specs are pretty good for it being 3 years old. 16 Core Threadrippper, 128GB ram and top-spec ASUS Motherboard and the sound card constantly cuts out. Not like cuts out and back in again. No, completely cuts out and doesn't bother to play music through the headphone jack. Contacted support who were next to useless blaming my hardware. I could possibly live with small audio dropouts but for the sound not to come back, you can hardly blame my hardware for that.
Would not recommend this device, simply because the support is not there along with the possible issues this soundcard may have with your machine.
I've been using this version of the Focusrite for more than a year now and every single day it disconnects from my PC at least 100 times. Many many recording sessions have been ruined through it cutting out in the middle of a take. I've searched the internet to find a solution finding a number of people who have the exact same issue as me however of all the people who have posted questions to try and fix their Focus rite none were answered with any fix.
If it worked it might be fine but since it disconnects multiple times an hour its pretty useless. Do not buy. Go buy from a more reliable company that doesn't send out faulty products
