That same old feel of Borderlands is back in this 3rd game. With plenty of gun's and Bad@sses ! Down the quick and simple review.
*Authentic Borderlands Play style *Great Sound Track *Graphics are beautiful, includes option to turn HDR on or off *PS4 PRO only gets option for better visuals or smoother gameplay *Control Scheme is the same as Borderlands 2 *note driving vehicles has been changed up *Characters are fun & engaging *Game does not support LAN play at all! You need Playstation+ although there is a split screen for couch play.. which I dislike. I think this is one of my biggest gripes about this game. *Frame rate does dip. *Starting up the game to get to the main menu does seem to take awhile. *There is a bug that freezes up the screen sometimes during multiplayer gameplay for 6 seconds and then resumes. Overall its a good game with some patches I'm sure it would get better.
I love the Borderlands series and BL3 does not disappoint. You have 4 characters to choose from (all are unique and fun in their own ways). The graphics and size of the worlds are amazing! AI is pretty good as well. It's early on, so there have been some issues with lag at times when playing online Co-OP, but not too bad and definitely is one of my favorite features about these games. The skill trees are pretty cool and allow you alot of variability to fit your style of play. You can respec easy enough if you want to try something different.
There are so many guns and so many unique features each one brings, it is sometimes difficult to decipher which is best and keeping them all becomes a problem after a while.
There is comedy, drama, great interactions as always with borderlands games. Overall, this has been a blast so far and I'm sure I will be putting hundreds of more hours into this game! Well worth the price of admission!!!
Update 1/17/20 Upgraded to 4 stars. The game definitely has a forced humor at times but as the game progresses the game does get better. The story is good as well. Try to ignore first impressions and give this game some time.
I've played borderlands since the first game and I'm disappointed in this one so far. I've only played for a few hours so far but the attempts at humor seem to forced, they did away with the cross pad being able to select weapons and overall, the game doesn't have that fun factor that gets you interested in playing more. The first boss mouthpiece seems very frustrating for the level you are when you hit him (just like deadlift was in pre sequel). Disappointed so far, really had high hopes for this game.
I will never totally hate borderlands as it was the very first video game I ever played in life. Borderlands one was my introduction to gaming so maybe I am biased to a point. That said Borderlands is more of the billions of guns and crazy things to kill that Borderlands is famous for. In many ways Borderlands 3 is much more polished and improved in gun play, imaginative guns with awesome combos. They made the guns seriously awesome in Borderlands 3. Legendary Drop rates are the most misery of any of the Borderlands Games. You fight a main boss and get loads of green and purple weapons what A CON. The game is not particularlly hard but it is challenging on TVHM. Borderlands is nice in that the vehicle customization is nice.
CONS are many but not deal killers on Borderlands 3
You get to customize your own vehicle with lots of awesome weapons and buffs but the minute you have to go on any exciting mission you MUST take a specialized vehicle provided by the NPC's. That sucks because you build your custom signature ride and the game makes it nothing more than a glorified Taxi carrying you around the standard map. It's like Borderlands lets you make a powerful fast Lamborghini car but condemns you to drive it only in city traffic, the frustration makes you almost rage quit sick after a while.
I love me some Ellie by the way. The wooden, predictable Borderlands 3 story with its paper thin plot sucks. All the people in the story with a remotely likeable countenance are killed off in favor of bland horrible NPC's you grow to hate. SPOILER ALERT: SPOILER ALERT: i hate AVA this insufferable bratty teenage Mary Sue that I'd kill if I could, I spent all of the game wondering why the Borderlands 3 story did not kill her off. I would have cheered her death! The Whole Children of the Vault story line is dull, obvious and unimaginative with ZERO Plot twists. I wrote better sci-fi stories than that found in Borderlands 3 in 7th grade.
There are a few breaths of fresh air in the story but they are quickly killed off. I adored the little Jewish explorer he actually carries this lame Children of the Vault story. I pray Borderlands 3 has TLC that features my little Jewish explorer friend he kept me happy and laughing every moment of our mission together. When he died I cried and i am not ashamed of saying so. Killing the little Jewish Vault hunter was unforgivable in my book added to the lame plot and I take off a star.
Borderlands 3 is the best in everything else but this is by far the weakest most boring, predictable, infuriating lack luster story of the entire borderlands franchise. Children of the Vault is not really a bad idea it was strangled to death by writers who are too bit hacks that did not give the narrative life. Also the traditional Borderlands comedic snippets said by NPC's is also lame in Borderlands 3. FLAK is the most well fleshed out playable character. They recently debuffed FLAK because he was too much fun to play. There are no Psycho's running about saying funny things "I want to eat your babies!"
Like I said, Borderlands 3 is definitely worth buying. I brought three copies and some more for my friends but, Borderlands 3 has the weakest story, uninteresting and down right obnoxious NPC's, it killed off the best people in the franchise for the dumbest reasons. Oh yeah cried when they showed the death of Scooter too! I'd buy Borderlands 3 in a hot minute because, it is Borderlands just not the best. Gun play, gaming mechanics are first rate the Bore-Der-Lands story is something a scag threw up!
Pros: Well thought out and balanced character classes with a lot of repeatability. Environments are huge and beautiful. Guns... so many guns... Drop rates for better tier guns seems to have increased. DLCs content are pretty good, but feel a bit expensive for what you get out of it.
Cons: I spent 200ish hours in BL2, grinding out bosses, walking friends through the campaign and replaying great memories. While I put a good 80 hours into BL3, I didn't get the same excitement from the story. Getting good guns made the grind less needed, but it also takes away from the challenge. DLC value.
Great addition to the BL series, but I feel like the time spent on the pre-quel should have been put into BL3.
I could barely contain my excitement when I knew BL3 was nigh. When it finally arrived I installed it, had a blast picking up guns and fighting psychos and then it hit me. Complete nausea and headaches. Eyestrain and bad headaches. I even took intermittent breaks and it didn't matter. Still feel like crap playing BL3 . Perhaps it is the art style or first person method but I could no longer play. However, the hour that I was able to play it was truly a solid, good game. An infinity array of guns makes it that much more awesome.
If you are a borderlands fan than you have to pick this game up. It’s not the best game in the series but I think that it’s better than the pre-sequel and adds a lot of new variety that I enjoyed. I still believe this series is best enjoyed one playing either couch co-op or four player online but a solo experience is good fun too.
It's the same game that came out three iterations ago. Not necessarily a bad thing - it's a great game model and fun character building shooter. But if you're not super into that, it's got little new to offer. If you're a fan of the series or never played and like shooters this is a great purchase. Otherwise I'd either wait for a good sale or skip it.
I have played Borderlands 1and 2. They were fun romps, but each had a level that prohibited further advancement. This new one offers a slicker interface, and plays pretty similarly to the other two. I may have something else to say if this one has another insanely difficult mission.
