I love Wolfenstein, they tried something different for this game that I was not expecting at all. The shooting is still solid. Though they added a new mechanic, now the game is a mix of Wolfenstein and a game like the division. Where you level up, bosses have high health n you need to be prepared to fight instead of you just being the weapon. It's not for me. I'll finish it. But I wanted Wolfenstein.
Machine Games decided to try something different here where instead of playing as BJ, you play as one of his daughters who go out looking for him. Great concept but the execution is a bit off.. Yes, Nazis are still here and it's now 1980's. The sisters riff off each other and it works.. I laughed when the sisters talk. They make jokes.
It doesn't matter who you choose because both sisters are there helping each other. This does work well most of the time.
Now, there are references to the previous games so if you played them you'll understand the story. If you haven't, that's OK because it's easy to follow what's going on.
All in all, I do like what Machine Games tried and curious to see where they go next with the franchise.
The gameplay was pretty solid. It felt just like the other two previous games. It was intense and flashy and bombastic. But the story was lacking. I was really excited to play the sisters but they weren’t memorable or fun characters. I didn’t like that you couldn’t pause the game or that it had didn’t have check points. There were various times that I got so far into a mission that, I died and restarted from the very beginning! Sometimes the AI of my sister was bad At reviving and I died various times.
The sandbox layout they came up with was a mess to me, it w as all over the place it reminded me of Wolf 2009. There were missions all over the place and it felt like everything was thrown at you. Also, many of the missions were very mundane and it didn’t really contribute much to the plot. Some missions were found in the same place and I found myself returning to the same place various times which I found annoying. I didn’t like the heart mechanism and that you had to rely on someone else to revive you, it was a drag for me. The final fight was weird because I couldn’t leave or restart the whole mission to get more ammo, I was stuck there and there was no check point to have a sort of progression to beat the game.
The graphics and the gameplay at times is all I can give them. 2.5/5 at best.
I'm a big fan of Wolfenstein as a whole. The over-the-top themes and 'Man in the High Castle'-esque plot make this franchise unique. Sure it's ultra violent and takes you to the extremes of where you think a time period game could go, but this newest iteration feels oddly out of place. First off, it jumps ahead in the franchise as BJ's twin daughters were born at the end of the New Colossus. Now, his daughters are young adults and ready to go out and follow in their father's footsteps as they head to Paris. While the game itself aesthetically looks the same, it feels completely different. You never leave Paris, but instead fight though separate districts and find yourself backtracking to past areas to complete new tasks on the same map. Enemies are now ranked and it's impossible to go up against them unless you, yourself have had enough time to level up. This makes some areas unreachable. There was also a lack of the charm to the characters that the previous two installments brought. I just wish there was less of the "lets take this to the multiplayer format" that's strewn all over the place in games that benefit from being single player. It's not terrible, but it's something I would wait to get on sale.
It lacks the structure of previous Wolfenstein games that I liked, most missions felt empty or not really important. If that’s your thing that’s fine, the gameplay is strong I just miss the emphasis on telling a story
Mad props for letting me bring my buddy with just my copy(three stars just for that), but I kind of got bored with it and couldn't care less about the story. 1 and 2 I completed , loved and got all the trophies. Maybe its just me... If I go back to it and finish it I'll be updating this.
Quality of the game was an overall travesty. The graphics are the same as wolf 2 as expected. But gameplay is brought down to an RPG style which does not go with a badass nazi killing machine can go for. The best part of the game is the ability to change up your weapons and the badass melee you can do with your weapons. Get the game if you wanna play a wolf game. I'd rather just watch the cut scenes on YouTube for they is needed for the next game.
