I'm not sure if it's the translator or the author but there are passages which are just leaden; particularly the description of acquiring fish and chips on the sea front. It takes quite a while for this story to take-off. When it does the descriptions of the various smells becomes lyrical. Not only does Alice have a strange journey but so does the read, although not in the way the author intended.
I realise that this was written in French and maybe if I hadn't been too mean to buy the French Kindle version I would have preferred it. It has been translated by an American - and it shows.
It is set in the early 50s and has a few inaccuracies and anachronisms but I don't suppose they'll bother anyone under 70, few people are going to bother that in the 50s Ferguson tractors were English TE20s and grey, not red ones from the US!!
If you are not a picky pensioner like me, you might well enjoy this extremely quirky love story
It was an interesting read and the idea of the main protagonist being a ‘nose’ added an extra layer of interest. Her travel companion being an artist offered the both senses of vision and smell being offered. Characters felt a bit week but the plot kept the reader interested. Found the history of the Armenian people of interest. Overall an enjoyable, if light read.
Fairly straightforward storyline, though with evocative descriptions of 1950's Istanbul. Would have enjoyed it more if the English characters' dialogue hadn't been quite so obviously translated by an American from the original French. Left the characters feeling much less rounded and authentic. Quite an odd choice really
Easy read, interesting pace as the author doesn't waste time before jumping to the next step. Interesting also the "intersection" painting and the "nose" concept. Simple story about surviving the armenian pogrom😱
Not my usual choice of story but a book club choice. Unusual story line but I did actually find it interesting especially the observations of convention. Very quick to read. Ending was a little disatisfying.
