The gameplay is decent. It’s not Rage 1 by any means. It’s DOOM gameplay with cars and less fun features at its the best, is the best way to describe it.
This game review is based on Day 1 1.02 Patch (11 gb update).
Can we have a one hour - long Unskipable intro to how FPS games work? And a 12+ explanation of what your first real quest will be via a 2d hologram? If that’s what you want for a intro to a game then you are in for a treat. If you thought that like most games Rage 2 would make you feel pumped to play the game in the intro level then you will be sadly disappointed. Like me. The over gameplay is meh at best. The graphics are very poor on base console (according to Reddit it is currently effecting even pro consoles and some PCs). There is no loot system of any kind past ammo, currency’s.
Graphics: The graphics are mediocre at best, on the base PS4 it looks very outdated, early PS3 era games looked better. (Borderland looks better). Too many texture loading issue and when they do they are at (currently) Very Low quality it seems.
Music / Sound Track: What soundtrack? I played for 8 hours and heard 1 - 2 music the entire time and those were story related. You spend hours listing to car noise and or your footstep + hollowing winds. No wasteland music like games made by parent company or competition (Fallout 4, 3, NV, Borderlands 1,2, prequel, Mad Max The Game, FarCry ND etc)
Guns: Weapon wheel shows 8-9 greyed out, so I’m to believe that’s all there is in the entire game. TOTAL ( Plus upgrades to each gun to add a little power/ clip size/ skin etc. VERY DISAPPOINTING to say the least, when a game like Borderlands 3 will have millions as it has had in all versions.
Save - Load & Respawn feature: You can save wherever you’d like, just don’t expect to have your car or whatever is around you to be there when you load back the save file. I saved and reloaded in a min and my car was gone, and so was the traveling trader that I was standing on his trucks entrance. Very dated compared to its in-house siblings (Fallout, Elderscrolls) where what you save is what you get. Not this game, you reload somewhere nearby with nothing you were or about to encounter. To add to the head scratching save game feature, you have to pay $10 in game credit to spawn your car close to you that the game disappeared.
Loot System: (What loot?) There is loot? I didn’t know that. The game feature mediocre level of loot. Think Borderlands but 1/1000th of the loot. The corps of your dead enemies disappear instantly, the game can’t even keep corps for more then 4 seconds. There is no “body looting” system at all, enemies drop junk parks and maybe a very small amount of ammo at best. As mentioned earlier there are No guns past the 8-9 in the game and their upgrade tree and possibility of skins as there is a menu for each gun to apply color skins found, so don’t expect to find a variety of each weapon in this game to even make it the least bit interesting. The loot is limited to ammo boxes, and treasure boxes and ark boxes which give you currency’s to use to upgrade your car / guns and abilities and also pure in game cash currency as well.
Beat a boss? What you think you deserve a cookie? Grab some cash and you got your reward, be on your way back to the waste land. Beat a bunch of random people at a hideout? Again ammo and currency is all you get.
Exploitability: As mentioned there is almost no loot system of any kind past currency’s and ammo restocking. That and the games massively empty wasteland (unlike other games made by the manufacturer Bethesda) the game has nothing to explore. Building are 9.5/10 times a Cube with no doors to open, there are no containers to look into, the inventory system is pre-filled just showing you how much ammo you have for weapons and utilities (grenades, drone, wingstick, car parts? and junk) it makes getting out of the car almost pointless. It’s rare that you’ll find something interesting at all and when you do your reward is ammo.
Summary: Don’t expect farcry, fallout, elder scrolls, borderlands even though it was heavily advertised to be on the level of these games. Instead expect a lifeless first person shooter with no sense of what it is. I would call this a linear open world first person shooter.
Don’t waste your money, wait for Borderlands 3 or buy the handsome jack collection and enjoy a game worth playing.
Great game, but there's a ridiculous racing game that is hard to win, even on easy mode.. I'm not a car racing type of gamer. In fact, I hate racing games. Unfortunately, you must win this race to proceed.
A shame to follow the original rage. The story mode is SHORT! The character upgrades are nice but you become OP within a few short hours. This is a 20-30 dollar game not a 60. Go play far cry 5 or fallout 4 instead. Played for 3 days and I’m done. If anyone wants a slightly used disc let me know.
The shooting is pretty good, but the special abilities are hit or miss. The world and the humor seems to be a ripoff of Borderlands, and the rest of the game, including the soundtrack, seems like a ripoff of Doom. It’s mindless fun, if you ignore the story. The story itself has so many plot holes that it seems like an elementary school kid worked on the script. Really, it is cringe worthy at times.
Ultimately, Rage 2 is appropriately named, because it's the second time in 6 months that I've been mad at myself for pre-ordering a Bethesda game.
I loved Rage 1 and I’m loving this game. There are and have been Rage 1 rip-offs and people are ragging on Rage 2 saying it’s like the other Rage 1 rip-offs but I think 2 is consistent with the look and feel of the first. I love that this game is single player and not MMO, which I’m not a fan. It’s a fun game with the right amount of mayhem.
The game crashes at the main menu every single time I boot it up. The only way I've been able to prevent this issue is by disconnecting my PS4 from the Internet. And then the frame rate drop down to single digits whenever I enter specific areas. I got this game after 25gb worth of updates/patches were released and yes I waited for set updates/patches to download before playing it. There's no excuse for a single player only game to have these issues. Luckily for me I got it when the holiday sale was still going on so I got it for barely over $20.00. And when it works it's fantastic. I mean RAGE 2 is essentially Mad Max and DOOM 2016 combined. Only with the annoying issues that you'd expect from a lazy company like Bethesda. All in all. RAGE 2 is a great game with alot of potential but not worth no $60.00. I'd say it's a solid $30.00 game at best. Maybe more if they ever fix the remaining issues.
