Awesome big book with so many stories. A breath of fresh air to read the 100 year old clever wit that is so far timeless. Delightful to read the popular stories again and all the ones I’ve never read before in between. Fantastic value for money. Recommend to anyone who enjoy an intellectual dry sense of humour and true insight into human nature.
HGW has a host of good stories; unfortunately, like most late Victorian and early Edwardian novelists, he tells them badly. No character descriptions or development, ( almost zero description of his wife!!); poor story-boarding; head-hopping; rather haphazard use of sub-plotting; 'pacing' unknown to him; long, over descriptive and unnecessary passages. Most of the book is a 'page turner', ie, quickly flick through most of the book to balance out pace and descriptive narrative. Wells owes the lasting admiration for his stories to the great film makers of the 20 century, who were better capable of following the rules of writing a novel.
These are semi-scientific books, written around the turn of the nineteenth century, which make good ready now... what's more, the language is the English I was taught at school. They are all plausible, if improbable given present day knowledge, but then I was told that all the clever people in this world are equipped with 20/20 hindsight! Just read and enjoy, you will be rewarded.
Riveted by this collection of HG Wells' novels. I only knew about the sci-fi and Kipps and Mr Polly. I have been reading my way through the others with great pleasure. Mr Britling Sees It Through, Wheels of Chance, etc. Also they are a fascinating insight into the social ideas and controversies of the turn of the last century. Not as different from now as you might think
there is so much more to Wells' writing than just his famous books. He had a dry sense of humour and a great imagination. His observations on his fellows are delightful to read. He writes well and he wrote a lot. Since his complete works cost nothing to download it is an unbeatable bargain.
Can't actually believe how much I am enjoying this book, most especially "War of the Worlds". It's written, obviously, in older English, which makes it an odd read to start with, but once you get used to it, the stories are very good 👍
