I bought this simply for tire swaps of my car. The 3/8 version would probably have worked, but I figured I'd get the 1/2 anvil in order to future proof this purchase in case I needed it for something more powerful.
This does an excellent job with the lug nuts on my sedan's wheels. It was able to remove them with ease (they were torqued at 80 ft.lbs). With the detent pin, the socket was relatively secure on there and never came off unexpectedly. I did not use a socket with the matching hole for the detent pin and it was still secure on there.
The auto/intelligent mode was really handy for my tire swaps. I left the wrench on that mode and it was quick to remove the nut but not spin off when the nut came free. Also when putting it back on it allowed me a stop it as soon as the nut had reached it's tension where I was able to then tighten by hand using a calibrated torque wrench.
This really helped speed up the tire swap process which happens 4 times a year for me (2x cars, 2x seasons) and after only one year it'll likely pay for itself in the tire swap fees most places charge. Even if only using it for this one purpose, it was well worth it for me.
The LED and belt clip were nice additions and work as expected.
Used it for the first time today for removing my winter wheels and installing summer alloys. My wheel nuts are torqued to 90 ft.lb This tool broke the torque instantly and effortless. In no time at all those nuts were spun off. I like the mid setting which prevents over torqueing. When the nuts are spun onto the stud, there will be a pause when the end of the tread is reached. If you continue depressing the trigger it will begin torqueing at which time you can get the sense how long to depress the trigger. I only gave it a second. When I used the torque wrench afterward they were very near the 90 ft.lb Excellent impact tool, highly recommend if you are looking for a mid range impact, though I feel it is more than mid range.
I just used the impact wrench to change the tires on our cars. The wrench quickly removed and replaced the lug nuts. The built in light is a nice touch. The socket can be difficult to pull off when the detent pin goes into the hole on the socket. I keep a small screw driver handy to push the detent pin down to remove the socket. If I want to remove the socket easily, I just avoid putting the socket hole over the detent pin. With a small 1.5 AH battery attached, this wrench is amazingly light.
99% of the time this mid-range impact wrench is preferred vs the high-torque version as it has already has more torque than you could possibly need for most applications. It is more compact and lighter than the high-torque version so you can get into small spaces. It has a built in LED light to illuminate what you are trying to work on. Brushless as well for higher motor efficiency.
Very powerful tool, pretty much eliminates the need for an air impact for anything in its torque range. I am extremely impressed with the real world power of this tool, many battery powered impacts I have used seem to over rate the power of the tool, not the case with this. For tractor, truck, and general household this is a must have in the Arsenal. My truck lug nuts are torqued to 165 ft/lbs and this peels them off no sweat.
I wanted this for a medium range impact for work and something I can use at home if needed. The low setting is perfect for 0-150lbft torque ranges and the high is 150-330lbft. The "precision impact" setting in the middle is incredibly cool and works well. Its a perfect size and with a 5ah battery it can sure go a long way. Get it on sale if you can but either way its an amazing impact. Incredibly universal with decent power if you need it.
One year of heavy use and I am still thrilled with it. Used for automotive repair to replace a Craftsman premium pneumatic impact wrench which was failing after 30 years of hard use. This DeWalt is very well thought out - I appreciate the dual torque range as well as it's other features such as auto spin down, it's light weight, it's compact size along with very low battery drain. This thing really is a beast when it comes to power - a set of torque limiting extensions is a must (also known as torque sticks). I must admit I was sceptical that it could be as good as an air tool and was very impressed when I saw that is more than capable to handle any of my requirements. I was a bit worried about several reviewers complaints that the output detent ball is too tight, but have found it is not a problem for me, and grips a socket or extension with about the same force as that of any other name brand professional 1/2 inch tool without any problems getting the detent to release. I found the functions of the center switch took a bit of getting used to but have learned to appreciate the advantages.
Stronger than advertise by dewalt. It's heavy a little bigger than it's mac tool cousin... But very similar. Thee handle is the thicker one... A small con as the smaller handles are the best in the industry. Also the auto torquing works well when doing cross pattern assembly for property torquing... It basically slowest down and pauses when torque is aplied!
