I generally love the Lego games. They have improved a lot over the years with the developers finally making some parts such as the timed challenges a bit easier to complete. Ninjago is based on the movie and follows as closely as possible to that story. As is typical, there are plenty of Characters to obtain, as well as Gold bricks. Instead of the usual Red Bricks you will collect Ancient Scrolls which will unlock different abilities. As you complete levels in story mode you will obtain medals which will upgrade your powers. There are no Canisters to collect. There are 8 main levels in the game with an extra bonus level for kicks and one Gold Brick. The levels are well laid out and there is usually a marker to hint you on which way to go when searching for items. Different prizes require different Characters with specific powers or Spinjitsu. Each level offers plenty to do and lots of items to search for and unlock. The map is particularly helpful in directing you to Gold Bricks, Character Tokens, and Ancient Scrolls. You can unlock the collectable marker ability which shows arrows for the locations of the three main collectables. This you will find in an Ancient Scroll. Its getting to all of them that is the challenge for the game. I found game control to be just OK. There was many times when your character would get stuck on items instead of intuitively stepping over or twisting around them. This forced you to start yanking your directional control to get them unhooked. This was especially annoying during timed challenges. The second negative was of all the Lego games I've ever had and played this one constantly froze forcing me to shut down the XBox and restarting. The third are the bugs in this game. I got lucky and did not encounter the Gold Brick bug in the Uncrossable Jungle level. There is an area where you build a satellite tower on top of some ruins then climb up and use a Character with Lightning Spinjitsu to charge it. If you do not have a Lightning Spinjitsu you'll be forced to play on and when you come back that Gold Brick will be locked out with no way to get it beside starting over. Second bug is in the first level Ninjago City North. If you open the DoJo to the left of the starting area in Story mode, and do not complete the challenge inside during a visit in open play mode, the Character Token will not appear. Fortunately you can use the cheat code for this character and you will still be able to obtain Plantinum. I tried for days and days to get 100% completion and cannot. The Ninjago Docks Timed run is just ridiculous. Impossible to navigate without getting hung up or falling causing you to lose those precious seconds you need to achieve the gold medal. Over all the game is not too bad, but you will have to be careful to avoid the bugs, and tolerate the less than par controls.
As someone who loves the Lego games, this one was a let down. I was able to finish the game within a week playing 2-3 hours a day. It's just much shorter than the other Lego games. Don't get me wrong, it is a fun game and I did enjoy it. I just wish this game was longer. Overall I would say this game is in the bottom 3 out of every Lego game out there.
