I am not sure whether the issue is specific to the device I bought. Following are the issues I faced - USB charging not working. When USB power is driven from laptop, it first shows a message "USB charging" and in the next moment it says device is not charging. - Unacceptable delay in acquiring satellites. Within the city, it takes 20 minutes to locate satellites. I tried on 2 routes within Toronto. Results are the same.
I bought this for use on my motorcycles because motorcycle GPS units either have terrible ratings (TomTom) or are stupidly and ridiculously overpriced. I like this unit very much. What I do not like is that Garmin has disabled the ability to link motorcycle headsets to it via bluetooth. You can link your phone, but not a headset. If Garmin had not invoked this level of customer screw offery, this would get five stars.
I'm from Toronto, Canada. Once I went to Buffalo, New York. Going there first time with this GPS works find, but when I was about to come home, this stupid devise won't stop rebooting up to 80% then stop, I tried every possible way to make it work with no avail. So I was forced to use roaming on my phone to get me back to Canada. It only start working when I was already in Canadian side. What a junk. the irony is this is my 5th Garmin that I kept upgrading. I hope some one can explain to me what had happened.
With 7" screen, map details is the least info one can get, street names of close proximity are missing; slow response to street ahead, should distinguish and clearly state left and right if they are different. Voice recognition works only marginally or fails completely, most of time wrongly responds. Searching by Street name does not work properly with address outside GTA and always thinking and then fails. Why default to NY which is New York , New York or North York, Ontario?!?
Except for the display, it is not a good auto GPS. It lacks many of the features I found in an earlier NUVI1695 and the added features are more annoyance than use. The announcement of every little curve and Railway crossing are largely useless and cannot be turned off. It won't work with Garmin Mechanic or Eco features. Very limited customization of display content.
All in all, a fantastic GPS. Great navigation & display. This GPS has periodic software updates & Map updates on the go. And it gets me to circumvent traffic to save time. The only downside of this GPS for me on a molecular Level is the voice recognition & the Bluetooth Audio. Hence as to why I haven’t given this product a full 5 stars. Typically people can’t hear me that well on the other end all that well when I’m on a phone call. When I use “Voice Command” to find places, intersections, ETC. It’s a hit/miss scenario right there; it works 50% of the time. But all in all. A good contraption for driving safely & intelligently to avoid traffic.
Its awesome unit , a lot of things in there to help driver , but notice one thing if its linked with garmin software on phone on first start it has problem finding sattelites when unlinked works good but still not finding sattelites as fast as my older nuvi 35xx model. With combination of rear view camera its great unit provides really wide angle and cam connects supa fast, so yes i recomend this gps plus backup camera!!
We used this GPS for a month while touring the USA. It was not easy to plan a route on. If you can enter an address it works but we often didn’t know an address. Yellowstone national park for example only brought up the south entrance. Given there are 5 entrances this was a serious lack of information. It doesn’t t know one way streets in many cases. It does not want to calculate alternate routes. If you pass the point it wanted you to turn it keeps wanting to send you there without recalculating an alternate vein when you know it’s a possible route. It wanted us to UTurn on a hwy for 40 miles. Not very smart in our opinion. It never advised on road construction or traffic delays. We compared it side by side with goggle maps on a phone and had better success with google maps.
love that big screen, only thing that i don't like is the power cable is plug in the unit , so each time you remove it from bracket you have to unplug it , my older gps has the power directly on the holder bracket so no need to unplug the power source when removing gps , beside that , the unit has great feature and better than my older for sure !
