Days Gone proclaims to be an open world game but it is nothing of the sort. You play a set character, run predetermined story missions, have no choice in any decisions or dialogue and travel to points on a map you are directed to. If you attempt to deviate from missions it actually restarts the mission as though the god of bikers picks you up and puts you back on the starting line. It is ironic that a game about bikers, a Hells Angel 1 percenter to be precise, should have such a total lack of freedom.
The general premise of the game is hardly original, a post apocalyptic Oregon, populated by humans transformed into bestial monsters referred to as "freakers". They are a bit like the vampires in I Am Legend, although they do roam about in the day. Despite the fact that they are not zombies, this game does feel a lot like a zombie apocalypse game and if you are like me might even be getting just a teensy bit tired of the genre.
The graphics are not bad, the natural environments look very realistic and the characters you meet are well animated, and acted. Likewise the bad guys are suitably creepy, most of the time anyway.
Gameplay involves running missions, scavenging for items and dealing with the aforementioned freakers. In many ways the game plays like a third person shooter, with a large variety of weapons to be picked up and some crafting thrown into the mix. A large focus of the game is on your bike, which for some reason runs out of petrol/gas every mile.
This game had the potential to be a lot more than it is, if the designers had let the reins off and let you explore and play as you like. As it is it feels once again like you are just playing through someone else's story, waiting to be told what to do next. I made the one decision that was still my own and turned it off.
This is a true "open world" game, be warned you may lose weeks or months of your life !! Game play on the PS4 is very smooth with stunning graphics and scenery. I enjoy the challenges and various missions, lots and lots to do. The character you play must earn "trust" and raise currency by "bounties" to upgrade and improve his weapons and motorcycle characteristics. If you liked the "last of us" you will love this, the apocalyptic scenery is stunning ( if that's the right phrase to use ! ), it is a very well thought through game. The controls are very intuitive and smooth. Very addictive game !
Took some time for me to get this game as I didn't think I would be any good at it or enjoy it. I it as the price came down and lock down got longer I thought what have I got to lose. As it turned out nothing to lose enjoying the game very much, took a while to get to grips with the controls, just used to another game set up that's all
Its like a spinoff from red dead and gta. Asin the graphics. Gameplay, combat Is VERY similar. Made by sony. Highly reccomend. The story its a beauty it keeps you coming back for more every single time and youll be sure to be hooked in for a good length of time. This game is HUGE. Im Not Kidding. But Good! SO SO GOOD!! Money Well Spent!!
Note: to the one star review complaining about melee not working, the tutorial was very clear. You need to press on the joystick in the DIRECTION the enemy you want to hit is, and then press R2 at the same time. And do not spam the r2 button or you will take unnecessary damage. You need to time your swings appropriately. I can't believe you gave the game one star because you failed to grasp such a simple mechanic. Player incompetence has no place in a review and it should never be the reason you give it one star. Hate voting like that is just sad and pathetic and it turns potential customers away from what is one of the best zombie games in the genre.
'Days Gone' is an EXCELLENT apocalyptic thriller that feels like an amalgam of 'The Last of Us,' 'Mad Max,' and a small dash of 'Army of Two.' I received my Amazon preorder early yesterday morning and in the first day alone dumped over six hours into it.
It's typical 'sony exclusive' quality ala 'Uncharted' series or 'The Order 1886.' Days Gone is a highly cinematic third person shooter with a pulse pounding narrative and engrossing character development. The hordes of Freakers are a sight to behold and the end-times 'Rest in Peace's cult aka Rippers are a nefarious entity that comes straight out of a Charlie Manson handbook.
I can't praise the game enough, or it's seamless blend of roleplaying and shooter mechanics. The upgrade systems guarantee a varied number of paths that you can take your character on and the Oregonian high-desert setting is stunning in its own right, oozing with deadly charm and untold adventure.
Days Gone is, so far, one of the best in the zombie genre. Fans of Dying Light and The Last of Us will LOVE Days Gone. It gets a solid 9/10 in my book.
For some reason I never bought this on ps4. No idea why. I think it got lost in the release of other excellent titles like gow4. Best zombie game I can remember. I have it for my ps5 but you would know it was a ps4 game. Graphics are excellent. I bought returned at same time. And basically I haven't played it, because I can't stop playing days gone.
