What an absolutely beautiful book and definitely the best that I’ve read so far this year (and I’ve read almost 50). Noa C. Walker has created an unusual, sweet and poignant story that stays with you once you’ve finished it. If one were being very picky it could be argued that Janica and Thomas might be a bit too good to be true; however they made me want to be a better person and to appreciate the little things in life more. And I wanted to be part of their circle of friends.
The theme of colours was one that the author used to the full, with Janica describing so many different things in terms of the exact nuance of colour she perceived them to be. It was a unique approach, and one that made me sit up and think, as the author uses it to encompass so many of life’s experiences such as love, illness, friendship, relationship issues, death, and family bonds.
I just loved this novel, and I can’t end this review without mentioning the translator as well, who did a wonderful job of making the book feel that it had been written in English to start with. I really hope that she and Noa Walker team up to bring us more, as I was disappointed to discover that this is the author’s only work currently available in English.
What incredibly detailed characters the author has woven. There is so much unbridled joy in this bittersweet story. My eyes kept watering in the final parts of the book! I hope her other books are translated into English!
A very emotional, thought provoking story. Makes you examine yourself and your shortcomings, raises your self awareness and find yourself lacking. Obviously written by someone who has experience of hurt and illness. Excellent.
