I started a Doctorate programme with zero knowledge of philosophy and yet it was one of the central modules! In panic I bought some books to get me started on the basics and this really did the job! It was very accessible. I would really recommend it if you wanted to dip your toe in, or if you're using it as a basis to help make sure you didn't sound like much of an eejit in front of your class! I'm now hardcore into philosophy!
BookReview #Philosophy101 by #Paul #Kleinman. In preparation for taking some university courses on #philosophy, I decided to get a few survey books on the subject. One book that I picked up months ago, but only final got around to reading, was Philosophy 101 by Paul Kleinman. The #book contains chapters that present either biographies or specific philosophical topics and problems. As the title suggests, the book covers what would essentially be in the syllabus of an intro to philosophy course. Beginning with the pre-Socratics to 20th century philosophers like Bertrand Russell, discussing the paradox of Theseus’ ship and the trolly dilemma, and having chapters on the broader topics of philosophy like epistemology and metaphysics; Kleinman provides the reader with a great introduction to philosophy . On the positive side, I think the author has done a respectable job at keeping the book accessible to a general audience; however, the more modern topics are challenging to present clearly in a concise format. My biggest criticism with the book is its overall lack of structure. The book jumps sporadically between time periods and topics with what appears to be little reason. I think the book would have benefited from a chronological or thematic rearrangement in the editing process in order to increase the overall flow of the book. However, even with this awkward structure, Philosophy 101 is still a great book for anyone wanting to get a general introduction to the field of philosophy.
A disappointment. I received this after ordering "The Philosophy Book: Big Ideas Simply Explained", which is far superior is just about every way (actual size, quality of book/pages/binding, content, number of Philosophers, explanation of ideas and concepts). I would highly recommend "The Philosophy Book: Big Ideas Simply Explained" instead.
