First off, the game is really slick looking. Best looking game on the Wii U so far. Aside from that, it is just a quality Mario Kart game. The anti-gravity stuff they advertise really doesn't change much about the game other than a few shortcuts on some of the tracks.
The online play is smooth and handles people dropping in and out really well.
I wish the game had proper battle arenas instead of just playing battle mode on the normal tracks. I like the additions of the Koopa Kids as playable characters, but this is countered by rehashes of other characters (Baby characters, metal characters).
The kart customizations are neat and do let you build a kart to your liking, but I found it was really hard to win races as anything but the fastest characters.
I bought Mario Kart 8 since it's the first 1st-Party Wii U title to be released that lets you compete against others online through Nintendo Network, aside from Wii Sports Club (for those of you who don't know, the other 1st-Party Nintendo Wii U titles currently available -- New Super Mario Bros. U, Super Mario 3D World and Donkey Kong Tropical Freeze -- don't include any online multiplayer features at all).
With very few first-party titles available for the Wii U, I thought I'd give this one a try. For my first-ever Mario Kart game, I was pleasantly surprised. The 1080p HD graphics and high quality soundtracks are awesome, and the ability to compete with 11 other people online over the Internet gives this game sustained replay-ability that the other games that I mentioned above don't have, due to the lack of online multiplayer features in them. Also, using the Wii U Gamepad to steer the kart is very fun and realistic.
One thing I was both amazed and surprised at, was with regards to the lack of latency issues while playing online. I thought for sure that without a Wii U LAN Adapter, competing with up to 11 other players simultaneously over the Internet through the Wii U connecting wirelessly to my Linksys router would result in some form of major lag happening during the races (the main complaint I had with Super Smash Bros. Brawl), but I was wrong, and online multiplayer was as smooth as if I had an Ethernet cable plugged directly into the back of my Wii U. Maybe this is partly due to Nintendo hosting the servers themselves now, as opposed as through GameSpy's servers, like in previous years. Still, very impressive.
My only gripe with this game is that it does become repetitive very quickly. Within about 3 days, I had finished in 1st Place for all 32 race tracks in the Single Player's Easy Mode. And then I found out that I had to do the exact same thing again on the same 32 tracks in both Medium and Hard difficulty. After playing through all 32 race tracks and finishing in 1st Place on all of them, having to do the exact same thing again on two higher difficulty settings didn't pique my interest at all.
Needless to say, it's a definite must-have for any Wii U owner. I'm still waiting for the next Pokémon and Paper Mario RPGs to be released on the Wii U, but for the moment, Mario Kart 8 will have to keep me occupied until then.
Very fun game. Lots of maps albeit shorter. Character selection is a bit lacking with the number of palette changes (gold peach, metal Mario, baby peach, Baby Mario and the 7 koopas) Online is fun but you can;t talk past the lobby even with friends. Battle mode is a bit lacking. However for offline co-op or online friend co-op the game is a blast!
Love the graphics... but was looking for something more.... Also still hate that the computer cheats, the higher ccs you go. I don't know if it is possible to make the items more "balanced" so it's not like the computer always gets the good stuff to throw at you when you are leading! Still, a lot of fun for the family.
Great game with some new tracks that look amazing. If you are looking for PS4 Graphics you will not be getting it, but if you are looking for a fun game that now has online capability than this is the game for you.
