Set in the 1950's, this story was both engaging, comical and serious. I thought that it was a lovely story of a childs-eye view of their own, often private, world. Akin to reading 'Mister Tom' its a life very different to my own childhood, and yet I felt both emotion and kinship with the child as he grew up in a sometimes brutal and fast changing world. Would really recommend.
Thankfully a memoir from an 'ordinary person' who has not suffering at the hands of an evil adult or been traumatised by their past. Instead a gentle well-constructed journey through the childhood of a boy (and his beloved dog) as he moves from a short-trousered world of boyhood innocence into the maturity of rock'n'roll, motorbikes, girls and some loss. Highly recommended with a great uplifting final anecdote.
I found this book really good. It was made better because I was on holiday in Sherbourne and could go and find the roads and places he was writing about. I would have loved to have gone into the Corner House to see it's improvements. Well worth a read if you're of a certain age to relate to his childhood.
I really enjoyed the way the book was presented, ie from the memories as a boy, not the memories of a man. It was very interesting to be taken back in time and to try to remember some of the places mentioned. I would fully recommend this as an excellent read. Thank you Colin. xx
