Probably the best 3rd party controller you'll ever find for the Wii U. Very lightweight and has a nice feel to it, though a bit rough around the seams. It is by no means perfect, the d-pad is pretty bad and the L/R shoulder buttons don't feel like they're really there, though they seem to work just fine. The joysticks are concave (like the Xbox controller) rather than convex (Playstation/Wii U controllers). Some people prefer one over the other, so that's something to consider. The triggers seem to be analogue (pressure sensitive) rather than just simple buttons that the standard Wii U controller has, however I don't think the Wii U actually supports analogue triggers. I haven't really had much chance to test that yet though.
Do take note that the Wii U will see this as a Pro controller and as a result will only work with games that support the Pro controller.
This is a high quality product. I heard other reviews on forums that it would not work with Minecraft Wii U edition, but at least for me it works perfectly for all games. One thing I would say is that because I'm a small person, it is fine for my hands, but it might be a bit small for other people. totally get it, save yourself 5 quid and get a durable and comfy controller in return.
I've now had ample time using this controller with Super Mario 3D World. It's a solid performer, made the game so much more fun to play over the tablet gamepad. The offset joysticks are nice for people who are accustomed to the Xbox 360 controller. The sticks themselves feel nice, on par with the 360, but not as nice as the PS4 or XB1 offerings. The round concave thumb grips are nice and help prevent slipping. The 4 face buttons all click easily and feel as nice as a 1st party controller, they operate smoothly and have no issues with sticking or anything like that. The D-Pad is functional, and feels nicer than the 360's. The soft velvety touch of this controller is amazing! I really wish every controller was like this. It prevents oils from mucking up your controller, it always feels and looks clean, and adds just a little more moisture resistance to prevent slipping. Its not textured, it just feels super smooth and velvety. The handles are nice, I wish they were a little longer and didn't have any points. It does fit nicely in the hand though, so I can't complain. I would just recommend that they redesign the handles to be a little longer. The triggers are nice, they are soft and and have a textured rubber coating to prevent slipping, really nice feel. My only gripe with the triggers are that they stick out a little too far, your fingers don't hug over the top of them as nicely as they could. And then the bumpers are the biggest downside to these, they are placed in their normal configuration and feel nice. But the design of the controller makes it so your index fingers have to contort a little to press them, luckily they aren't buttons used very often, but if they angled the design of the face so that both the triggers are lower and the bumpers are lower, then this would be a controller that could rival the best of any 1st party offerings. I would definitely recommend this controller over the Wii U Pro. It's definitely the best on this console.
This is a great solid and well constructed controller! It's got some weight to it which is great for me but may be bad for others who are used to lighter controllers. The case material is the soft touch plastic which makes for easy holding even when your hands get a bit sweaty. The trigger buttons are rubberized which I also appreciate. The bumpers are just plain old smooth plastic which makes no difference since less time is spent using them. The sticks are solid with no play in them but not too stiff that it's hard to move them. The D-Pad is solid and smooth, but there is raised soft material plastic surrounding it which some have commented causes them issues when using the D-Pad, but for me it causes no issues as my thumb sits in the middle and slide to which point I need.
Be sure to charge it up when you first get it before trying to sync it with your Wii U, about 10 to 20 minutes worth of charge time before sync.
My only complaint which may not be specifically the controller itself is that when I tried playing Black Ops II the sticks were way too sensitive. I had to turn the sensitivity to 0 in the game. While that helped, it took near 15 seconds to turn around!!! Uh, can you said DEAD? :-( I still need to try the controller with some other games to see if it is just a Black Ops II specific issue.
Overall, this is a really great controller, especially at the lower price that it is now.
Nyko has once again proven that third party peripherals don't have to be awful. Put away your old time impression of off brand products and mend the scars left in your memories of being second player with the madcats controller, because this nifty nyko controller is great.
For starters, the official Nintendo pro controllers are awful and cost twice as much. I'm sure they were trying to avoid being a copycat of the Xbox 360 controllers as much as possible, but the right analog stick should be on the lower side. Its been that way for generations across many consoles and it just works. Secondly, their controllers are glossy. Wake up and boycott glossy handheld electronics already! They look great sitting on a table or something, but the second your fingers touch it the surface goes to smudgy hell.
The nyko controller is unfortunately not matte, but rather cheap silicon (maybe rubber?) casting. But it works, I have a solid grip on it, and isn't an eye sore. The trigger buttons are a little uncomfortable to push down, but that's about the only problem with this thing as a whole.
If you want a Wii u pro controller, skip the official one, save yourself 20 dollars, get this instead.
I bought three of these to go with my one Nintendo Pro Controller. I've used them with friends on and off, and had no complaints. However, last week I decided to start playing Wind Waker HD, and made the choice to use this controller exclusively. So far I've put in about 25 hours over 5 days, and the controller is operating flawlessly with no need of a charge (screen just went to two bars of charge has been used). Moves are 100% repeatable. Like any good quality controller, once you learn the controller mapping, playing is instinctual and you forget the controller. This controller works reliably and consistently, and feels good in your hand even after hours of gameplay. Unlike the Nintendo Pro controller, which has a glossy finish, this one's matte finish always feels dry and comfortable.
All controllers are different. I imagine if I were switching between the two brands I'd find things I like about the Nintendo branded controller more (and vice-versa), but they would be minor. This controller is solid.
I bought this controller for my nephew because he only had the main Wii U gamepad and leftover nunchuks from the old Wii. It would drive me mad that nobody had bought him a spare regular controller so I went out to look for an inexpensive purchase to satisfy my concerns. I ended up buying this - the Pro Commander for Wii U.
The controller doesn't jump out at you as being the highest quality product you have ever purchased. It is light, feels like it is cheap and is probably not very durable. HOWEVER, for less than $20.00 it is an absolutely great controller. For goodness sake, controllers cost upwards of $60.00 these. To have a spare controller to Play Mario Kart with my nephew it gets the job done. No question about it. It also looks very nice and functions without any flaws. Like I said before, for less than $20.00 you cannot go wrong. I recommend this controller.
