Full disclosure: I ignored all of the bad press this re-release got because I did not want to bother finding and setting up my old Playstation 2.
After having finished both games, it is now evident to me why these are considered two of the greatest of all time. The glitches and downgrades were not bad enough to rule out me being able to experience that. But these problems are significant enough, especially with analysis from reviewers and fans I consumed after finishing the games, to see that I should have listened to the naysayers and found the originals somehow.
Three fares the "remaster" worse; glitches and bugs abound, most upsettingly with almost comically bad lip-syncing, very atmosphere-breaking in a cinematic game like this. And who can forget the infinite sub-machine gun, which was so geniusly placed as a reward for beating three, making the player eager for a second playthrough. Now it has a disgusting audio glitch when holding the fire button. On the bright side, some of the new voiceovers like Claudia and Douglas are fine, but the original work for Heather and Vincent was better.
Two is less glitchy and allows us the original voiceovers, but it is extremely dark and upon viewing screenshot comparisons, the colors and visuals were downgraded, even with the "fog patch" taken into account. Also, it's really fun getting hit by an enemy while you're waiting for the screen to return after leaving the pause screen. Both games are rife with performance issues.
Some of this could be forgiven, but it's only two games! I am outraged that today, in 2020, I have no way of playing Silent Hill 4 on any modern console. There is Homecoming on Steam, but that's it. To pay fifteen dollars apiece for two unfinished, neglected ports is outrageous. It looks especially bad compared to the magnificent Metal Gear Solid remastered collection, which had all the titles that a fan could ask for, done well, with the exception of maybe Twin Snakes.
Overpriced, underfinished, artistically downgraded, nothing good can be said of this collection. The fans' hate bandwagon was one-hundred percent deserved in this case.
Don't buy the 360 version there is no patch for it. Unless you are a super fan of Silent Hill, I wouldn't recommend this Collection to anyone. These games were made with a incomplete build of the original games from the ps2. This collection takes away from the originals were supposed to be played, the HD exposes what was not meant to be seen in the original versions. I suggest finding a ps2 and tge games with it to get a true proper experience.
I’m not a Silent Hill purist. I’ve played SH1, SH2 and SH3. Silent Hill 3 being my favorite out of the bunch.
With other HD Collections, the games have been re-engineered from retail copies from the games original retail disk. The code they used for the Silent Hill HD Collection was unfinished code. Apparently this built of the game was not complete and had plenty of bugs and graphical errors.
I really don’t mind that they rerecorded the voices for SH2 and SH3. It’s just that they're not any better than the original VO (voice over). That’s really the problem with this HD Collection. That everything has been messed with, but noting is for the better. The VO, the music, the sound effects, the fog, the light, and some of the graphics have been altered.
I hope that these games get re-released on the PSN.
I give this product Silent Hill HD Collection, by Konami a 2 out of 5.
If you never played SH before and want to know should you buy this? No, find SH2 and SH3 on PC and play those instead.
I have the "patched" PS3 version. Silent Hill 2 is unplayable in my opinion. The fog effect looks like s***. There is frame stuttering and slow down regularly. The sound is s***. I have nothing of merit to say about this game. Silent Hill 3 fares better, which is why I give 2 stars. There is still some slowdown occasionally, but it runs fine usually. The "HD" graphics are very jagged and need some anti-aliasing. The game is still enjoyable, though. I recommend playing the games on the PS2 or with emulation, you will have a much better experience.
I hate that Silent Hill 2 is packaged with Silent Hill 3. Here's the breakdown:
. Silent Hill 2 . 5/5 stars + a must play + a mature and probing story; some parts are especially vicious and raw; + atmospheric, disturbing, well paced + does an amazing job of hinting at where to go without holding your hand. I was never lost or confused. + puzzles are genuinely fun and it is strongly recommended to use pen & paper throughout the duration. ~ odd ways to trigger the different endings. that's eh. - the only negative thing: the boat sequence. truly awful. hard to control and I didn't know I was trying to dock at the starting port I looped back to after 10 minutes.
. Silent Hill 3. 1/5 stars ~ gameplay encourages evasion. not a bad thing for survival horror. - terrible story. they keep you in the dark as much as possible and 1/4th of the way through the game decide to do a giant exposition dump on you within the same minute. - just a gigantic dump of enemies everywhere. I know it's because they want to make you evade and use the beef jerky (ugh), but it's not fun. it looks messy and is just annoying more than anything. - some environments are red and muddled to the point that you can't see ANYTHING. you'll know what I'm talking about because you won't be able to see any of the doors on the walls. - ONE HIT KILL SCENARIOS ARE EVERYWHERE. so many times I questioned if I was going the right way then I just died instantly to a cut scene. this happened multiple times and I never went, "oh that's fair that was my bad". I always felt blindsided by them. - THIS GAME FREEZES YOUR CONSOLE!! Wow I can't believe this one. In the span of the few hour playthrough for this game I had to HARD RESET my ps3 5 times. FIVE TIMES! That's five too many! - Riddles are mostly boring and forgettable. There is maybe one or two in the game that are alright.
Get this collection if this is your only way of playing Silent Hill 2. It's a must play I think everyone should experience at least once. That being said never boot up Silent Hill 3. It's a technical mess that will hard crash your system often and does its best to sh** all over what Silent Hill 2 accomplished. I honestly don't even have a pair of games that comes close to how badly a sequel dropped the ball as Silent Hill 3 did to Silent Hill 2. Truly an awful experience.
Graphics worse then the origanal and the game play lags it stuters. Lame new voice acting. Had to stop playing I love the first 4 silent hills, 2 and 3 being my favorites respectivly so this was to much for me to bare. Just dont buy it. Get the old PS2 versions if you can.
This game is absolute garbage compared to the two titles it boasts 'HD' versions of.
For starters, fog, a pretty crucial atmospheric effect in SH looks blocky/pixelated (how the flying F***?)
Any colors that aren't rust red or grey are washed out in favor of creating a more 'grimdark' atmosphere, which backfires horribly.
The new voices in SH3 are atrocious, as if the staff of whoever handles the miscarriages that are recent SH titles did the voices themselves. Not to mention Heather sounds like an angry chimpanzee when she swings any melee weapon, which becomes unbearable to listen to after the first swing or two.
I could go on-- but I shouldn't have to. Atmosphere is everything in SH games, and this so-called 'HD' version does everything in its power to remove any semblance of immersion.
If you're finding it impossible to track down the PS2 versions of these games, go ahead and pick up the HD version. The back of the box should boast that it's "Better than nothing."
However, if you can acquire the PS2 versions of these games or already own them, DO NOT BUY THIS. Don't.
