Garmin regards this as a marine device, presumably because of its water resistance and the fact it floats. It is difficult to load maps on to it (but possible) and the support lby Garmin I found truly terrible (the chat was useless and it took five calls to the voice lines with endless waiting to get the issues resolved, with some agents being v helpful nd some downright uninterested.). So that is more about garmin support but as the product is a garmin product that is a key component. Does it work? Yes. Would I buy another garmin product? I doubt it to be candid. That is based on my experience with the Fenix 5, this 78s and my motorcycle navigator. Look hard elsewhere.
Built-in obsolescence (if you let the batteries die on your old one, it quits finding satellites and you have to buy a new one, even though probably all it needs is a software reinstall). Nosebleed-expensive SD map cards EXTREMELY fragile, like a flake of varnish, with the 76Cx cover designed to close on the chip & snap it in half. Miniscule screen, a loose back cover that you will need to keep track of for the rest of its life, super-vague map descriptions (and no support) misleading you into buying the wrong map(s), every aspect monetized to the max (e.g. designed so no holder but Garmin's will fit it). Buying this thing was a miserable experience.
Bought this to replace an old Garmin 12 hand held GPS, that was lost when I loaned it to someone. This unit seemed to be a similar product but with updated features. Well I really wish I could have just bought another GPS12 because this update is rubbish. The unit itself when it works, is so slow almost to the point of being useless, when finding some address or POI. Also the software is not very intuitive unlike the previous model, it takes ages trying to go into this menu and that to find the setting you are looking for. I connected this unit to my mac and eventually got it to synch all my waypoints and routes from another Garmin GPS unit I have and now it will not reconnect no matter what I do. The screen is to small to be useful for navigating as you really need to have some fields shown at the top such as distance to next turn and this then takes up so much real estate that the map picture is very hard to see. I also bought the UK road mas and the Marine maps and have been disappointed with these as well. I think i need to send my unit back as it randomly crashes and reboots or just stays off. When it works the software is poorly laid out and takes forever to do things that should be easy. All in all this was a very expensive package and no where near worth the money. If you want to have a car sat nav buy a Tom Tom, and for sailing navigation I certainly do not feel that I can trust this thing to work never mind aid my navigation so it is just as well it is waterproof and floats because I can see this thing getting hurled over the side some day soon.
I ordered this to have a handheld backup to the chartplotter on my sailboat, but despite being advertised as a "Marine GPS Navigator and World Wide Chartplotter" it does NOT have any marine charts preloaded! It doesn't even come with a microSD card so you can load these on. You have to pay Garmin several hundred more dollars to buy any marine charts you want. I should have looked at the Q&A page before purchasing, since despite saying it a MARINE navigator, the first question answered says "its made for use on land". FALSE ADVERTISING! I will be returning this unit since it is useless for my purposes without shelling out hundreds more.
These get shipped empty of the maps. You will need to spend more money to get the maps. You can only get those maps from Garmin, and they are NOT cheap!! The download process is also NOT simple or straightforward. You will hate Garmin.
GArmin lies for the customers. You can store up to 2000 waypoints, by if you sort them by alphabetical order and try to serach for a waypoint after 892, your device will carsh and shutdown. I was contacted to Garmin UK (I'm from the middle east) and they said that this is by design :( . They even open a refrerence case: "The reference number for this case is PSC 41733" Very disappointed.
