I wanted this game when I first heard about it around launch, but waited until the recent price point to pull the trigger. The story can be summed up in the opening cut scene, and doesn't ever try to progress or have a real purpose. Essentially you drop into hell and turn goblins into your minions to take hell over. The fighting is similar to pikmin, and the point is similar. Throw your minions on the enemy and avoid letting them or you get attacked or you lose health and they die = fewer minions until you find a gate with more or make it to the end of the level. The major issue is that unlike pikmin, you follow one path of predetermined monsters as you go from each floating arena to the next until you get to the gate which leads to the end of the level. After a few levels all you have to look forward to are bosses, because every other enemy is just a reincarnate of something you have already fought against.
If you like metal music you have that to look forward to, I don't but thought it added to the pain of playing through this game. The controls take less than a minute to learn and are pretty easy. There are some upgrades that help add damage to enemies, but I didn't really see a difference in gameplay when using them. Finally the trophies can be a little challenging but definitely doable (If you are worried about getting a platinum).
Explaining three stars: If you like monotonous combat, pikmin without puzzles or an open world, and metal music than there is a lot to love in this game. It is easy to pick up and play as there are only really three different buttons you need to know. Plus I got it for less than $20 so I can't complain that much. Definitely a portable type game, I just wish it took advantage of the graphics and storage space of the system.
