So i just finished this game. 51hrs. There is no real replay value. Spoiler alert!
So in the beggining of the game the story was pretty cool. I just love the drawing style rather than trying to make the game life like. Within your roster each member has great character and personality. Anyway as the story progressed it revieled some very boring and shallow vilains with extremely little back story. I mean cmon, i cant even remember the old bald guys name after abruptly killing him so prematurely in the game (*・～・*). That really dissapointed me. But the biggest let down was Selvaria the Valkyrur. Man. When Alicia's powers as Valkyrie were awakened i mean, she just rag dolled Selvaria??? Like wtf. With 0 explanation. And the one battle after that defeat Selvaria commits suicide (˘･_･˘). Total bull. From then on my drive to play the game changed from enjoyment to just get to the end to see if there were any answers. Unfortunately there were none. Soo i mean it still an ok game but if you are like me and played Valkyrie Profile on PS1 then Valkyria Chronicles just cannot compete. The only thing better about it is the graphics, and only by a little. Valkyrie Profile beats Chronicles in all aspects hands down no questions asked. I mean Chronicles had huge pitential that Sega never exploited. Like when Isara was building the airplane i honestly thought it was going to give the Gallians an edge in the war but, instead Sega shot and killed Isara and the only time the plane was used was at the end of the game to save Welkin and Alicia off the burning Marmota (*・～・*). Dissapointed. And Alicia as a Valkyrur was also wasted potential. I honestly thought the princess of Galia was going to turn Valkyrur since she was supposedly a descendant. But turns out she was a Darcsen (〒﹏〒) omg. Sega no wonder you idiots screwed up with the Dreamcast (ノ｀Д')ノ彡┻━┻. In the start they show the empire mercelessly killing unarmed civilians. Then there was a guy torturing prisoners that Varotte wanted executed but was talked out of it by Largo. Then after the guy made it back to Maxmilian, he was questioned about the torture allegations then sentenced to execution? What? Doesnt make any sense at all. Sega sega sega put the crack pipe down please. You went soo far as to lock darcsen up from old to young in a house after we liberated fazou i think it was and burned them all to death......... I just dont understand. You guts went from one side to the ither to try and set the moods in some characters of thus game. Idk. It really ruined the game for me. Which brings up another bad thing that ruined this game: battle controls. I hate the controls. Especially for the tanks. Just turning it uses up your distance travel and you have to turn when the camera turns and makes veer off course (ノ｀Д')ノ彡┻━┻. Or moving foot soldiers, soo much dead spot in the joy stick before the soldier actually starts moving only to all of a sudden bee line into a land mine or enemy fire only to get killed jesus christ. So god damn annoying. And the icening on the cake? Missing your target at point blank range. Its going to happen, and often. Just like Sega had a great gaming system with the Dreamcast and some how missed their target. Sega you really suck big fat donkey balls.
All in all if you see this game for $9 and less i say buy it. If its more than that then go look for something else to buy. For $9 you get about 50hrs of game play (including all bonus missions (my copy is not dlc)).
What can i say about this game what can't i say about this game. It has the most stunning hand drawn animation graphics i have ever seen in a game it's absolutely breathtaking and i don't throw that word around very often. And the story is very engaging and i love all the characters in this game even the villains. Everything in the story and the character interactions is so well done and it has really good voice acting that really set the tone in this game. And the music is some of the most beautiful music i have ever heard and it has the most unique battle system in rpgs i have ever played and it works so perfectly. The gameplay is a turn based action rpg meaning each unit is controlled freely to the point you can take complete control of their action you can even aim their weapons like you are playing a third person shooter which is a lot of fun. And right now this game is very affordable i got a brand new copy never been opened for $20 that is a steal go buy this now and see for yourself.
When this game first came out in 2008 I was like most people in North America and passed it up. It didn't get nearly the hype that it deserved. You hear the term "the game was under-rated for it's time" thrown around a lot. But this game is definitely deserving of that statement. The learning curve is very low. The graphics have a beautiful style of a water color painting in motion and the gameplay is spot on. Controls are tight and intuitive as well. And no point did I find myself in an intense mission and hit the wrong button to cause a failure. For people who are fans of the turn-based genre this may seem upon first inspection to be more of an action RPG but make no mistake this is the best type of turn-based game. It's really hard to explain to someone who hasn't played the game how well the action sequences are meshed with the turn-based gameplay. It's very immersive and addicting.
The story takes a bit to get going, so that's the only small negative that's worth mentioning. I found myself having favorite team members not specifically for their special abilities (of which each member has several random ones) but for their personality. This speaks to the voice acting being top-notch as well. When a teammate is charging into battle they will say a battle cry and some of them are downright hilarious. Their special abilities are heightened (or hampered) but the other people you've selcted to be in the group so that part of the game also requires your attention. You can't just stack your team with all the Rambo types and hope to win. You start to care about the people on your team as you would your own friends. Normally in games like this it's all about the missions or levels and you keep plugging along so that you can get to the next level and skill up, but with Valkyria Chronicles you just don't want to see your friends perish. You will fall in love with them and that's something that's very rare for this genre. The anime-style characters also aren't the typical cutesy ones. They feel like real individuals with their own style of battle and sometimes hang ups. (The game adds another level of realism as there are some characters don't play well with others and will be at a disadvantage if you move them too close to teammates that they don't like).
The skilling up and upgrades to your units and your main vehicle the "Edelweiss" tank is also fun and rewarding. You only are allowed a certain amount of upgrades. Balance is the key to victory and although you may be inclined to go full offense, you'll quickly find that if you go this route your tank is a sitting duck for the enemies to pick apart. You will need the right mix of classes, vehicle upgrades (which once "purchased" you can modify before each battle), and tactics to ensure a quick victory.
This game is a must-have for anyone who's into tactical turn-based games. Fans of more action-based tactical games will definitely not be disappointed as well due to the action sequences weaved within the gameplay. Check out gameplay footage on youtube which shows a bit more than can be explained in mere words.
The Playstation store also has additional levels to download as DLC so even when you finish the stock game, you will have more missions to enjoy.
There is no doubt in my mind that if you're reading this review you will have hours of enjoyment with this game. FOR GALLA!
Typical heavy handed JRPG storyline. Pretty slick and original idea for a tactics based RPG. The game can be a little unforgiving if your characters are downed in battle. Causing a little frustration and quite a few reloads. Lack of trophies is a slight negative.
But the main characters are enjoyable, and the squadmates are all unique with their own appearance, traits, and abilities. Gameplay is original and intellectually engaging. I'm glad I was able to find this for $20.
I do most of my gaming on the 360 since that's what most of my friends play on, and I only get PS3 exclusives once in a while. Valkyria Chronicles had me on the PS3 more regularly for the last couple of weeks (sorry 360 friends :P), with its addictive gameplay, interesting story and characters.
I also like how it merges some RPG elements with strategy, and the battles have more action to them than other strategy titles this genre reminds me of (Final Fantasy Tactics, Advance Wars) it has a nice balance of it all. The artwork is also worth mentioning, interesting render technique used for the whole game; beautiful colours making every scene, even though in 3D, give off a feel like it's a watercolour painting.
For $25 it's a steal. I've seen this title at GameStop used for $44.99
The game is a twist of traditional strategy game that works on a Checkerboard system. Rather than moving your soldiers from one square to another, you control them to move in a 3D environment. Different types of soldiers have different qualities, such as a scout is more mobile than a lancer. It incorporates certain aspects of a FPS shooting game into a strategy game though it doesn't demand on your shooting skills.
The story is amazingly good with memorable characters. Anyone who like strategic game should have it.
