Not my cup of tea. Weird story. Borderlands is better/more fun as a Gun RPG. Dragon Quest is better is a turn based RPG. Wild Arms series is a better gun based/turn based RPG if you want to go back in time a bit.
Reading online I came across several reviews who talked about the game play of Valkyria in relation to a game I played when I was in grade school called Shining Force, which I really loved. I am going to have to disagree with this idea. Shining Force was a much better game. Valkyria Chronicles follows the turn-based strategy format of games like XCOM or Shining Force, but is much less entertaining and challenging. This game is linear to a fault, not just in the storyline but in each battle. In most cases there is one way pretty much to win each battle, which made me feel like I was doing one of those mindless, pointless completion assignments in school. I made it all the way to the last battle portion of the end of the game and couldn't bring myself to finish it, it was too boring. I gave the game two stars because it was briefly fun, it just went nowhere. The art direction is impressive and the storyline itself had promise. The developers should have spent a little more time working out the monotony and it would have been a five-star game. I wish I hadn't wasted the time.
I love rpg games like final fantasy, but I found this game to be slow, completely linear and a bit boring. It does have a calm feel about it, and it does look like "art", but if you are expecting a final fantasy type game then you will be disappointed.
This game gets way too much credit for being a "good" game--I don't understand it.
IMHO, the game play was severely lacking for a PS3 game. If the game was released 5-10 years ago, then I would say the game play was decent. It is very linear, very basic and very repetitive. The story line and characters were just 'ok'. The graphics were 'average'.
I love RPGs and the reviews here on Amazon for the game are great, but I found myself bored with this game and confuse why, apparently, people like this game. I think of this game as being on the same level as a PS1 game. Sorry, but a 2 out of 5 stars rating is fair.
