Silent hill homecoming is a big departure from the series as it was developed by a western studio Double Helix Games as opposed to Team Silent and it certainly shows. You play as Alex Shepard returning home as an active soldier on a tour of duty as he gets home and well his younger brother is missing and it’s up to you to find him. Let’s get into what’s good and not so good about the game shall we!
Pros: - The plot to this game is actually intriguing and there’s a big twist later in it that will actually catch you off guard. - The monster design for the bosses on this game look awesome! My personal favorite is a giant centipede like monster that funnels and moves in the walls! - The atmosphere is pretty good the location’s have a creepy vibe to them and the signature fog looks nice!
Cons: Yeah that’s all I have for the positive - The gameplay really is not that good, it relies way too much on combat this time around which wouldn’t so much be the problem if the combat just flat out didn’t feel broken. The melee combat feels like it relies too much on dodging but dodging is all but impossible on this game mainly because your enemies have no wind up in their attacks or have patterns making it very difficult to time. In the end I found spamming the melee was really the only way to efficiently deal with your foes. There are guns but the aiming feels clunky and has a slight delay almost like your aiming a tank and I found myself missing fairly often. Melee really is the better way to go it’s just too bad they’re both kinda broken. Exploring the town your in doesn’t feel as rewarding as in previous games too it’s a lot of dead ends or small things that didn’t even feel like they were worth the trouble. The puzzles kind of feel a little generic too like they were trying to capture the magic of the older games puzzles but only came up with a cheap Chinese knockoff. - The graphics even for the time really don’t look that good on top of that the game is DARK making a few sections a pain to get through because of how dark it is. Every character looks like a plastic action figure and the animations look jagged and robotic, even a lot of the enemies have these same problems which speaking of - I mentioned the bosses have good designs, which they do, but the standard enemies simply don’t. A lot of the enemies have a real “I think I’ve seen that somewhere else.” feel to them, they are very uninspired. Some enemies are literally recycled from previous games like the nurses and pyramid head from the second game in the franchise and this completely defeats the purpose of the creatures being unique to each character. The ones that are unique as I’ve mentioned just feel like “altered” versions of monsters you’ve seen in other games or movies.
So even though I made this game sound like it has more bad than good, which it kind of does, if you can get it for a cheap price I would say go for it! The combat even though is bad it’s at least tolerable and doesn’t make the game unplayable and unless you absolutely hate the idea that silent hill turned into more of an action game or that it doesn’t feel like a true silent hill game I say go for it again assuming you can get it for $20 or under!
This game was very irritating. The boss fights are unimaginative and repetitive. All the voice acting is sub-par and the character animations are not pleasing to the eye. I picked it up for less then 20 bucks, and am still displeased.
The game is much harder then in needs to be. The action is off, with clunky controls which makes fighting the enemies much harder than it should be. The puzzles were OK, nothing truly stood out.
Some may like an extreme lack of ammunition in the game, making it much harder. But after trying to go toe to toe with the monsters and this games controls I found myself using the pistol/shotgun/rifle as much as possible.
The game does have some frightening moments, but as a huge fan of SH1 and SH2 this game did not fulfill my expectations.
I believe the story gives too much away as well, removing some of the mystery surrounding the town. In the end this should hold me over until the HD collection comes out.
