I can't say enough about MSR's Whisperlite camp stove. It is light weight, easy to use, and boils water in a flash. However! The real turd in the punch bowl is this pump-valve. Bad engineering, poor quality, and lousy durability. This is the third one I have had to replace. A real hassle when you are depending upon it while on the Appalachian Trail, miles from civilization. Someone in product development get the message and fix this problem. No more plastics. Use titanium or stainless steel. And make it so you can disassemble it without a degree in rocket science. KISS (Keep it simple stupid)! And give this thing some guts so it can take a licking and keep on tickin...
You can buy the replacement pump but you cannot buy a replacement leg assembly/burner component. When my replacement pump failed I sent it in for warranty replacement. Having an immediate need for the pump I purchased a new pump figuring that I would get a new leg assembly/burner when the failed pump returned and then have two complete stoves. Yippee, at least one of our city-living kids often accompany me into the back country so I'd now have a complete stove for an every-now-and-then companion. Not so fast, after inquiring and calling, MSR can sell you a standalone pump but not a leg assembly/burner. Just makes no sense.
This is my first amazon review after buying hundreds of items.
I purchased two of these and on both of them the red handle broke off of the top. I keep them on the fuel bottle and on the outside of my pack in the bottle holder. I guess when I put my pack down they just break off. I'm not buying a third one. I use needle nose pliers to grab the broken piece and pump it. If that doesn't work I'm selling my International and making an aluminum can stove. No moving parts. Which is a bummer. I really like the International, but I can't keep stockpiling broken pumps.
