Over all the product seems strong except for the leaver that you push down, which seems really flimsy and flops around some. Not sure I would recommend this product.

Preface: I bought this product used on Amazon, but I had to look up how to unlock the mechanism to get the contraption to hole-punch. According to Swingline's website for this product, other users said there are no instructions provided (strike one.) As a used product, I understand I'm not guaranteed an instructions manual, but this makes absolutely no sense if you bought this item brand new.

If you look at the design of the 3-hole puncher, there's an unlock and lock method icon on the side to indicate that you can lock and unlock. I was thinking that it is part of the lever itself. Nope, you need to remove the tray and slide the clip to the left to unlock. By default, the clip should come in a lock position on the right (strike two). Make sure to listen to the click.

Based on how it locks and unlocks (for storage purposes), there's NO WAY I would want to even bother locking or unlocking. Strike three.

I replaced my old hole-puncher because the plastic tray cracked and I put up with it falling off for a year. I figured the upgrade was in order and I was punching more than ten sheets at a time. Unfortunately, I don't understand why many product makers have not considered a metal tray that doesn't catch and crack. If you're a frequent puncher, removing and placing back the tray will wear and tear the catch tray. A metal or a harder plastic will keep it lasting longer. Also, Swingline should have designed slight curves so there's no confusion how the plastic piece should slide in. Common sense, of course, tells you the thicker side (where you place the paper) should be on the same side. Nope, it's entirely possible to line up the thicker side with the lever.

What it does do right is: it is easy to punch holes. In most other designs, you're pressing on on the knife. The giant lever doesn't require you to put force directly on the puncher, so no marks or sores if you're doing thousands of sheets.

It is bulky for what it is. Depends if you like the lever. I guess I prefer it.

Truth be told, it advertises as a 2-7 adjustment. I say don't bother. Buy a more expensive model if you want to adjust the placement of the holes. I've used the puncher for 10mins and I don't even want to bother opening the plastic tray to remove the paper, much less want to find tools to unscrew the preset placements. If you need more holes, you also need to buy additional metal pieces to screw them in.

I typically don't write too many reviews, but I'm more inclined to practice my writing. The reason why this item got a quick review turnaround is its status as one of Amazon's best selling hole punchers. I honestly think the reviews praise too highly what is a decent product. But it works. Maybe that's what counts.

I think I’m more partial to items that have been used and have quality control done on them before reselling them, for almost HALF the price. I was going nuts thinking I could wing it, and use my 2 hole punch... yay you can think it; I was being LAZY. Not to mention all the papers I ruined because I didn’t buy this item sooner.
It’s heavy, but sturdy. It can punch holes in over 30 sheets of paper.
I’m a student, and I have to print everything now. I have binders for all my classes, to stay organized one must buy the proper tools to do so. I highly recommend this beauty. It’s been most helpful and actually fun. I bought it for next to nothing because it was a reused item. But I’ve done this before (bought item that were simply bought by mistake and returned) and just because someone else had it, doesn’t mean it’s trash. The packaging was ripped, but I don’t use that for anything. No complaints. It’s perfect.

I purchased this for our nursing station. The main thing to know is although it may be used as up to a seven hole punch, it only comes with three punchers. We scrounged around and medical records found us two more that fit to make it a five hole punch. It was frustrating more than anything else. It really ought to be made clear that it is not set up for anything other than a three hole. They do not provide the extra pieces. Those are about 10 or $12 each. So unless you have the extra pieces, the product will cost you anywhere from $30-$60. The moral of the story is don’t throw away your extra parts. 😁

After empty difficult to put tray back on

THERE is no lock feature - it is packaged with a plastic band which must be removed to use. But no lock feature after that - but not my concern. The problem I continue to have is even if ONLY doing one sheet of paper and press done as hard and as far as possible - often have to remove the "paper holes" manually as still attached!! And if not careful you can rip the paper which almost defeats the purpose. My 30-year-old 3-hole punch rarely did that but after 30 years it broke. Wish the new ones were made at least half as well. Written 18 months after initial review - above is still true - but wish to add that after empty tray of the punches - putting the tray back on is always difficult. I find myself not wanting to empty as often as I should - because I know that the tray is just a pain-in-a** to get back on. Still looking for better one

I purchased this product for home use after using the same model at work for 2 years. I love it! I can punch 10-15 sheets at a time with ease. (Punching 20-25 sheets seems to require more strength than I've got lol, but it can be done!) At home I am currently using it to punch holes for my 5.5 x 8.5 binder. (Adjusting it to punch holes for 5.5x8.5 sheets was easy.) PROBLEM (which is why I'm only giving it 4 stars): As instructed, I lined the pages to the "bottom" of the hole puncher. When I placed the pages into my 5.5x8.5 binder, they stuck out and as a result got bent and messy. I also had a hard time closing my binder because the pages would get caught on the mechanism that opens the binder rings. This is only a problem if you're OCD like me! I am now using my uber paper cutter to cut 1/4 of an inch off the top of each sheet. Problem solved! >.< For those of you who don't have a paper cutter, a simple fix is to snip the TOP LEFT corner of every page. **Using it for 8.5x11 binders is no problem; the pages turn fine and fit properly within the binder. This hole puncher is easy to empty and put back together. I also like the lock feature; it saves space and makes it easy to carry. I would definitely recommend this product to a friend!

This hole puncher is well made and reasonably priced. I would give it 5 stars except for one thing: If you want to insert more punches -- for instance to make it into a 7 hole punch -- the locations of the inserted punches are limited by where the holes are drilled to drop them in. I found out the hard way this puncher cannot line up with my DayTimer Folio size binder rings. If the drilled holes configuration does work for you, it's easy to add new punches which is at least good. Just push down the handle to unlock it, and insert the punch and screw it in from the bottom. Note to Swingline: This is a great puncher for general functionality, but please make a version of this with fully adjustable punches that can slide within a groove and lock in place to match any 8 1/2 x 11 binder configuration.

Bought it for college... So much better than the one it's replacing. The lockdown function makes it much easier to store, and it doesn't take much force to punch through even close to twenty sheets at a time. I also like that it catches and stores the punch-outs.

The only reason I gave it four stars instead of five is that if you have a packet that's stapled together with more than twenty sheets (say, 50 to 100) - which several of my teachers have liked to give out, the staple has to be removed first. This wouldn't be a problem, except that it's a little challenging to then find a stapler that'll go through that many sheets when it comes time to re-staple the packet. This could be solved with a cutout on one side of the three hole punch. That would also enable three hole punching a paper that's longer than 11 inches (not that there's much demand for that, I just thought it'd clarify what is otherwise a pretty vague sentence). Despite the minor design flaw though, it's a good product and I'd recommend it.

I bought this for 3-hole punches on legal paper (8 1/2 x 14). I'm not sure if this is noted in the product description, so it's my fault, however, please note that although it has multiple punch settings, because of the side guides it DOES NOT PUNCH PAPER LARGER THAN LETTER (8 1/2 x 11). I love the Swingline product line and this is a very nice, well-made, user-friendly hole punch, so rather than return it, I will likely just find another product that suits my peculiar need of 3-hole punching on legal paper.

Handles about 20ish sheets of paper well. Says it will handle a bit more, I don't feel like it. Every now and then, paper hole punch outs stick in this and it doesn't work as well. All you have to do is take off the bottom cover that holds the punchouts (over the trash can), and then push the hole punch all the way down. It will push them out and everything will be peachy. I gave the 4 stars because of the slightly lower capacity and the pieces getting stuck every now and then.
