Para os amantes do espaço, não tem jeito melhor de passar o tempo do que lendo esse enorme e incrível livro. Só no começo, com a carta de Buzz Aldrin, você já fica emocionado com tudo aquilo que está sendo discutido.
I read the reviews before I bought this book. Some of the reviewers only gave one star because the cover was either damaged or marked. I took the risk knowing that I could return the book. Lo and behold the book arrived with marks on the cover, just as if a wrapping robot had greasy digits. This was easily fixed with a cotton swab, which my wife uses to remove makeup, and some surgical spirit. The book is now in perfect condition.
The pictures and written material are first class and ideal for a beginner studying for astronomy exams or just an amateur like me who goes out every night, when there are no clouds, to look at light polluted skies in the city with binoculars.
Buzz Aldrin wrote the introduction.
5 stars for the writing and the pictures.
1 star for me for finding a solution to the greasy cover.
No need to send it back and the book is 5 stars as far as value for money is concerned.
Ordered on the evening of 30th December and arrived next day without prime - 5 stars for that.
Completely disappointing book for anyone who has looked up Wikepedia or other astronomy books. This is supposed to show a lot of photos of main object in the solar system and also of other deep space stellar objects. There is usually only one original photo per object even of the sun. Most planet descriptions miss an image of their inner geologic composition. The explanations for each section are so sparse that they are nearly completely useless, more directed at a 10 to 13 year old child than an adult. By better books like Paul Murdin's excellent @Secrets of the Universe: How We Discovered the Cosmos' and his 'The Secret Lives of Planets'. These have only few photos but the text gives you all the information you ever want up to upper intermediate level of astronomy knowledge. Couple these two books up with the DK Eyewitness Planets' book (directet at young children but has far more original photos of the planets than this National Geographic layman's book) and pick another low cost book on the glaxy with also a lo more photos. If an original photo is used than only on of the visible light. No infrared, x-ray and radio wave photos to get a better understading of the internal structure.
In all other respects this Atlas lives up to the high standards of National Geographic publications. I did not return the item on this occasion because of the poor jacket, as I do not believe in unnecessarily causing disruptions to delivery cycles. However, had I intended this purchase to be for collection standard keeping. I would then have returned it asking for a guaranteed free from impediment item.
Looks like a lovely book but obviously missed the quality control check - the cover was thrown on (upside down which is obviously not the end of the world) with the corner folded over and marks on the cover. I bought this as a gift so I'm having to return it.
Bought for my husband as he loves all things Astronomy. He is very taken with it. Very informative book with detailed maps of the surface of each planet, photos and very detailed information about each planet. It's a large weighty book but for anyone seriously into Astronmy it will be an invaluable source of information.
