Amber is one of those characters that has a very active circulatory system, turning red with every compliment she receives, it surprised me enough that she was still very attached to the bullying she received in her teens, because she is already walking towards her thirties (time for a therapy she already had, right?).
As much as the book already brings an experience of the future couple as a domestic couple, I believe that the book is more about the people of the village and the store than their relationship, but I liked their homy side, even the "chich-lit" fun scenes are more homy (especially when it comes to the red tractor on the cover !!).
Josh's mother's resistance to renovating the store at the beginning of the book was a nuisance, but it was a good thing that she gave them both the freedom to improve the tile. Because Amber is a designer on the area, she comes up with ideas for even using simpler materials, and I read thinking that the stores out there could be more charming and cozy than they are.
The Village Shop for Lonely Hearts shows the good side of small towns, which is the sense of community and being able to count on neighbors for anything without worries, and that a well-engaged community prevents people from feeling alone.

This is such a charming, quintessentially English read. I absolutely loved it! Amber is the kind of woman you'd want to be your best friend - loyal, supportive, generous and kind. I felt invested in her journey from the first page. And Josh is rather gorgeous and his unfortunate circumstances pulled at the heartstrings.
This wonderful story felt like a hug every time I dived into it. Warm, romantic and beautifully written.
Amber has just returned from New York, having lost her job. Her plan is to join her parents in New Zealand but first, she visits her godmother, Cathy who runs the village shop in Cranbridge.
When Amber arrives, she finds Cathy on the eve of finding out results following cancer treatment and the shop is on the verge of bankruptcy.
Then there is Cathy’s son, Josh. When Cathy leaves him and Amber in charge of the shop for a while, feelings emerge. Does Amber’s future belong in New Zealand or Cranbridge?
Cranbridge sounds so idyllic. I got a bit of a Beaulieu feel from it actually. I know I want to go visit, especially if it’s Christmas.
Amber is a fantastic character. She’s warm and relatable. At the beginning of the book, she’s at rock bottom and she doesn’t know what to do next. It was great to see how she and her feeling of self worth changed through the book.
Josh, Oh Josh. If there are any Gilmore Girls fans out there, he gave me a bit of a Luke vibe. He’s a little grumpy but beneath that, he’s a loveable, dependable, honourable man.
I felt for both he and Amber actually. Both of them are a little lost. I became incredibly invested in their story. I fell in love with the other inhabitants of Cranbridge and, as this is book one in the Riverside series, I hope we don’t have to wait too long before we see everyone again.
There were some wonderful laugh out loud moments in this novel. This is a gentle, enchanting book full of warmth, love, humour and romance but above all, it’s about friendship, love and finding the place you belong in the place you’d least expect.
I hope you get a chance to put your feet up with this book and escape to Cranbridge for a while. I loved it.

The story centres around Josh, who returned to the village when his Dad died and his Mother was diagnosed with cancer. Cathy was traumatised by the sudden death of her husband and her own ill health has made her reluctant to make any changes in shop, or her life. The shop is failing and bankruptcy seems inevitable, Josh has almost run out of savings to keep it afloat and doesn’t know what his next step should be.
Amber was planning to spend a few days in Cranbridge with her god-mother Cathy, en-route from New York to New Zealand where her parents have relocated. Recently made redundant from a prestigious New York store, her confidence has been shaken and she wants to go home but doesn’t know where that is now that her parents have moved to the other side of the world. Her visit to Cathy was only supposed to last a few days, but things kept delaying her departure, then when Cathy was given the all clear, she was asked to stay and help in the shop while Cathy flew off to Singapore and New Zealand, to see her younger son and then Amber’s parents.
The store was a mess, stuffed full of boxes and things that no-one seemed to need. Initially Amber made a few suggestions about how to brighten up the shop and eventually Josh decided to give it one last try to make the shop profitable.
The story is about what happened next, discovering new friends, awakening community spirit, making a village store the focus of the village. I enjoyed the journey.
