'Zines come and go, they are usually offered to read for free; if they pay the authors for their work they attract better quality stories but they struggle to create revenues through advertising and fold.
Thuglit (and another fantastic 'zine - Plots with Guns) has been around for years but even they had to fold a couple of years ago. Recently (I'm writing about this in February 2013) they've reemerged in a new format - pay-for-the-issue. In the 20's, 30's and 40's, when the pulps ruled, they offered cheap entertainment for an amount of money that anybody could afford -10 cents. Today, thanks to Apple and the iTunes Store, that number is 99 cents.
I think the folks at Thuglit may have cracked the code to a new pulp era. Part of what didn't work, for me, in the web page era, was that I, as a reader, I had to seek out the content and try figure out where I left off the last time I visited. It was a pain. Now I can buy and download any issue I want (no more troubles trying to get back issues - I can also see the return of the serial with this) take it with me on my tablet, or e-reader, bookmark it, put it down, come back to it, just like a real magazine.
This is exciting stuff.
Oh, BTW, Thuglit is crime fiction; down-and-dirty, mean, scary, tough and they are not afraid to use swear words. Just so you know what you're getting into.
Some of them, anyway.
"Luck" by Johnny Shaw was a home-run: George V. Higgins meets Charlie Bukowsky. How can you not like a story in which the main characters are a couple of no-hopers named Scrote and Violence? They are a little like Jay and Silent Bob with a really wicked mean streak.
"Thuglit" #1 did have its downside, though: now I'm going to have to buy "Hard Bounce" by Big Daddy Thug Todd Robertson, himself. The excerpt included in the maiden issue of "Thuglit" was just too good and too short to satisfy me.
I'm a big fan of crime literature with crooks who talk and think like crooks. "Thuglit" has 'em in spades. I could eat this stuff up, myself. If you share my taste in crime yarns, bon appetit!
Now, THUGLIT is back, with issue #1 of the newest iteration, and let me tell you something, folks...it has lost none of it's power, packing a wallop right out of the gate.
It's 99 cents. You can't lose. Buy it.
Two fair warnings, though.
#1...beware. This is gritty stuff. Edgy, awesome, well crafted, nasty stuff. Don't expect kittens or knitting needles in this crime fiction, unless someone is hurling kittens off a roof or stabbing someone in the eye with a knitting needle.
#2...beware again. Because if #1 doesn't scare you off, you'll be hooked. You'll be coughing up 99 pennies every thirty days or so for your fix of THUGLIT.
author of BLOOD ON BLOOD, WAIST DEEP and The River City series
Out of control kids, adulterers, skimmers, a brutal father. These are some of the people who bring about situations that lead to incidents of violence. Agree or disagree, the people who exact punishment are going to do the deed and go on their way without remorse.
This is a collection of stories that will leave you wishing that they published issues more often than once every other month.
