The plot, environment, and characters are all incredible. I love the constant references to older games, I love exploring new areas, and I've become attached to Olivia. That being said, the combat is super meh. The puzzle system is a chore and the enemies are super lifeless. If this game had the traditional battle system of 1000 Year Door, it would be my favorite Switch title.
I'm still stuck on the final boss, but since I've completed almost everything else, here's my review of the game.
Pros 1. Comedy is top notch, or maybe it's just my sense of humor. I laughed so much at this game. Definitely one of the funniest game I've played so far. 2. Despite its comedic and simplistic story that is targeted at children, the boss fights are quite challenging. Truth be told, I've sworn at the TV several times during some of the boss fights, but in hindsight, I really enjoyed them. The best thing about the boss fights is that they are all different, and they all require different strategies to beat them.
Cons 1. While I had fun with the bosses, I did not enjoy the regular battles. For one, you do not level up when fighting regular enemies, so I actually find fighting enemies in this game to be a major pain and waste of time. Regular enemy battles aren't nearly as fun as the boss fights. 2. Game feels a little bit short. Maybe it's because I've gotten better at video games over the year, or maybe it's because I'm so bored during this lockdown, but I really feel like this game is too short for the most part. I have it for less than a week, yet I'm already at the final boss.
Overall 4/5, definitely recommend if you are into Paper Mario (but it isn't another Thousand Year Door) or want to play a game with more light-hearted content.
I'm not really into these kids of RPGs, mostly because of how slow they are. This game took me about 25 hours to beat, and I got most of the things on the side (maybe like 90%). You can't speed through text or speed up gameplay in any fashion, so a lot of the game you're watching cutscenes and fighting repetitive battles. It's not a bad game, and it was my first Paper Mario game. If there is a sequel, I'm definitely going to play it, and I'll likely try Thousand Year Door, because I hear that's the best one!
Got this for my wife, she opened it and there was no game inside.
Enormously disappointed... that's an understatement!
Update: Originally this was a 1 star rating, but due to Amazon's outstanding customer support I was able to get a refund and just go buy this game at a local store. I was obviously stunned because I've never had this issue ordering games here before. Oh well mistakes happen I suppose.
Overall the game itself is great and honestly deserves 5 stars, but due to the hassle of having to deal with a refund I deducted 1 star.
I am loving and having fun with the game story (plus the story alone is worth the pricing point as a whole!), but the dang battles (especially the boss Battles!) are annoying to play through—good concepts on paper though poor executions in the actual game. This game would of received a five-total-stars from if it had a better battle systems, but the circular alignment battles make me want to just break the game whenever I (and accidentally at times) get into one, so I am comfortably okay with the four stars it gotten from me since the story alone is fun to play through. What about you?
I love this game so far! It’s very challenging, super cute, and really funny. I love Olivia for her innocence and her funny dialogue, and the other characters you come along like Bobby (Aka Bomb-omb). The only reason I give it four stars is that some of the bosses are... office/school supplies?? But, the challenge you receive in trying to beat them makes up for that. Don’t think you’re coming for an easy game because it’s not always. Much love to this game, and I definitely recommend it for anyone curious in getting it.
I played the old paper mario and loved it as a kid. I bought this thinking I would like it as well but I think I've outgrown it. I'm sure it's a really good game if this is what you're into, it just not for me anymore. Good quality product.
Not the best Mario game I've played but definitely enjoyable. Kinda simplistic for my tastes as there isn't really a high degree of challenge, but if you grew up playing Nintendo and Mario it will still put a smile on your face.
