Right, so we can all upgrade our ever changing gadgets with all the latest consoles and TV's bigger than our dinner tables but thankfully Mario never changes. A classic, brilliant and fantastic game, with all the nostalgia of the old game boy game and a few sneaky extras, you'll be far from dissapointed. Admittedly they have made it a bit harder and it gets frustrating when you have to restart the same level 18 times before moving on, but it's still addictive, and still great!
Controls are normally a massive thing for me when playing a game and quite ironically I hate the Wii games where it's all based on the exact movement of the controller etc, but this game is not like that at all. You tilt the wii remote to its side and use the up,down, left, right and 2 button, just like gameboy controls.
It's nice to see they still actually make games like this still, It's nice to have a change from all the hi-def racers and shooters once in a while!
I bought this for my son and I was dubious when he first asked for it as he has the game for his Dsi and wasn't sure whether this game would be exactly the same but following pester power I ordered and I'm glad I did! Although the game is similar to the Dsi version being able to play in two - four player mode makes it a lot more fun and there are some new characters to use and some parts of the game seem totally different to previous versions for other consoles. We have had a lot of fun playing on the game. One thing that I don't like about it is the game only gives you the option to save your progress at the castles part way through and at the end of a world. You can save your progress at other levels but it can only be used once so for example if you save the game while having lunch it will allow you to return to the level but if you then go on to lose all yout lives you have to start from the beginning of the world or the middle castle which we have found frustrating.
I bought this to play with the kids. As soon as it arrived, I opened and tried it out. It didnt work at all! It was probably faulty cd so I sent it back. Now the seller is saying it may have been mishandled! Well definitely not by me! They either gave us a scratched cd or an old used one! Beware!!!! Not happy with the seller.
This game has very good multiplayer. It also destroys friendships. I started playing the game alone and left the first world with 20 lives gathered. My friend then visited and by the time we had reached world three, I had lost all my lives and had had to continue 4 times. It is amazingly fun, addictive, funny, surreal and pretty, as well as nostalgic. My friend and I had to stop playing because I was becoming ratty and was hitting him every time he bounced off my head, sending me to my death.
In single player, it is just as fun, but because one feels that there are no obstacles (or friends as I used to call them) to perfection, I continually restarted games should I miss a coin or a secret passage or even if I lost a life. This made progress hard, and it took me about 7 hours to reach world 4. At this point I saw mario every time I shut my eyes, so I took a razor, heated it in a candle flame to sterilise it, and carved the world map from the original Super Mario Brothers onto my forearm.
I thought that Super Mario brothers cannot get any more innovative than the old titles (various NES titles that I used to play with in my younger days!). But I was very wrong. This is a very exciting, well designed and detailed game. Youngsters love it, it is their most favourite game since Christmas out of many titles they own. Although one has finished the game he goes back and plays the previous levels. The 2D platform does not dissapoint. Although it's a great game, in comparison to other titles I think it is a bit pricey, so giving it 4 stars, but for game enjoyment/ fun I have given it 5 stars.
If you are like me and love the original 2D side scrolling Mario games then this is the one for you.
It is the best 2D Mario game ever (at least until Super Mario 3D land is released).
You can play solo or with up to 3 friends (yes 4 people at the same time in a Mario game :D) and save and resume solo or with other people. The controls are great, back to the simple 2 buttons plus digital D pad with a small addition: you shake the Wii remote to make the character do a twist and grab things. A great control indeed.
Recommend this title for all fans of Mario and newbies to.
I bought 'Super Mario' because I used to play it as a child and I absolutely loved it back then. It's generally good, nice graphics, good challenges, but there are aspects of the game that really irritate me such as: the fact that you can't save each game before going to the next one, which means that if you die on the last game of the group, you have to go back and do all the games in that group again, which can get really repetitive if you keep dying on that last game. Also, most games just remove a life from your character when they die, but in this one not only you lose a life, but you're also placed in a bubble and you need to be rescued by another member of the team, which I think is a useless and time consuming addition to the game.
