The book has great pace and great pathos! Lori is really honest about her experiences as a therapist and as a client. Several characters' experiences are woven into this, as Lori tells the story of processing a grief of her own. It's semi-true, semi-fiction. A really clever mix. Quite unique but very human. Loved it and will miss "checking in" with Lori, her clients and her therapist, Wendell, now I've finished it!
I first listened to this book on audible before buying the paper format. What an hilarious narration - sometimes heartwrenching as well - of a therapist’s life. The book also covers topics that I was not familiar with, enlightening the reader on these areas: single-mother pregnancy, the mulitple ways to change career paths in one’s life, and how to cope with fate of having a serious disease at a young age. Definitely recommend to anyone looking for a good laugh, or for an easy to read self development book, or for an original modern autobiography: the book belongs to all three of these genres.
The book is written by a therapist and tells the story of her patients. It helps you see what therapy really is about and shines a light on your own life. How you think, what you struggle with and how you can improve your own mental health. It is very well written, engaging and a tool to help in this thing called life
Laugh out loud funny at the start and then it got more serious, but in a good way. So beautifully and cleverly written that I was fully, emotionally invested in the lives of both the author and her clients by the end of the book.
I loved this book. It was a special offer on kindle. I couldn't put it down because the combination of the author's own story plus client experiences really had me hooked. I then bought the paperback for my daughter who is training to be a counsellor. It is very interesting and informative. It made me laugh and cry.
It is rare to find a book that pulls you in only after the first few sentences. This is exactly what this book did. I picked it up because, as an aspiring psychotherapist, I wanted to understand the ins and outs of therapy, from the perspective of a therapist. The author really showed what it was like not only for her but for her patients through therapy. I found so many parts of myself in this book, and it’s one that I will always look back through. Feeling very emotional ending this review and coming to terms with the fact that this book is now over, but i guess what i can say to ease the pain is.... ‘let’s take a pause, even though we may never meet again.’
I laughed out loud numerous times, bawled my eyes out a good few times and was deeply moved by our common humanity - which comes through strongly in this book. Grew to love Lori’s patients and Lori and Wendell. Exquisite book; one of the best I’ve read so far in the year. Between and within the stories are also gems of wisdom; lots of highlights on my kindle. Thank you Lori, for a moving, touching, page-turner of a book 🌷
Super entertaining and informative look at successful therapy, from the therapist's point of view and also from the client's. Lori Gottlieb's professional background in film and TV production, medicine and therapy combine and yield such a thoughtful story arc. I could read her all day long.
This is a super book. Lori writes in an engaging style that is moving, funny and interesting. I loved the book from start to finish; it is one of the most truthful, real and honest books that I have read since reading Yalom's "Love's Executioner".
Whether any of this is true, or if it's just an odd novel, I feel like I gained an idea of what being a therapist is like. And I'm glad I'm not one! At times fascinating and at others tedious, Ms. Gottlieb certainly knows her subject matter.
