I like the work of the author in the Atlantic and Oprah mag. I was excited she wrote a book. At first, it was interesting then it just drones on and on about her and her ex-boyfriend. Disappointed at what could have been a more interesting book about people she helped rather than one about her. Also left me wondering what my therapist thought of me.
Bought this for Book Club and unfortunately 10 out of 10 of us were disappointed. She’s funny, but at the same time as a health care professional I found it sad that she feels the need to write about patients. We all have issues, but this therapist has more issues then most....and after awhile it just gets old!
The author is working out a broken relationship - and we readers are her therapy! Tossed in the mix are anecdotes from her clients as she try's to sort out her options. If this is appealing to you - you may enjoy the book, if not - you may be irritated that you are not getting what you paid for. I've recently learned that the book is to he the subject of a TV series. That premise might be more suitable for entertainment rather than enlightenment.
What the author is writing about is so important. It brings mental health to the forefront and relates it to every day people. Even the schmuck that is cocky and apparently has it all. I give her credit for writing this book and for being brave enough to let people in to her life and her inner most thoughts (and fears). All that being said, the actual book was a bit of a disappointment to me. FThis book was very long in the way it is written. I found myself falling asleep during the book and not wanting to finish it. The last 75 pages ago were the best part of the book though so I’m glad I kept at it. 2 stars is for the length of time (>3 weeks) it took me to get through it...this length book usually takes me less than a week.
I love to read, however this book is tedious. The author jumps around with her own therapy . I like her stories of her patients but listening to her go on and on about her life was tough. Had to read and finish for the book club I am in so I couldn't just donate it somewhere and not waste my time.
Meh. There are some nuggets, but it’s hard to get past the author’s self-importance at times. I hate to break it to her but people proooobably aren’t thinking about their therapists as much as she’d like them to be. Anyway- not terrible, but not great. Borrow it from someone if you’re bored.
