ESSA edição, e todas as anteriores, de Epic Collection, nos trazem a essência do Hulk. Não havia a necessidade de transformar o Hulk em um hipster com rabo de cavalo e camiseta regata, ou em um guarda-costas em Las Vegas, ou em um monstro perverso e imortal... NÃO... aqui está o Hulk limitado, lutando contra uma infinidade de inimigos clássicos, conhecendo pessoas como Jim Wilson e o Doc Samson, ou tendo atritos eternos com o major Talbot ou o general Ross, ou ambos. PERFECT!

Volume 5 of the Hulk Epics takes us through 1971 and 1972. To a large extent,his 'standard' persona, the broken-English-speaking, hunted brute has finally coalesced out of the various experiments with his power and personality that dominated the sixties. The book generally finds a comfortable rut in this period, alternating between the Hulk fighting the military, battles with various villains and monsters, and false hopes of a cure.

Having Herb Trimpe as the regular artist probably supports this comfortable but somewhat repetitive feeling; his work is solid but not particularly exciting, although he obviously gains more and more confidence with the book's cast as he continues.

The most striking development of this stretch is the introduction of Jarella, the Hulk's microscopic new love interest. The struggle to get back to her and the effects of this arc on Bruce's relationship with Betty drive many of the issues here, and Big Green's various trips into microscopic worlds are visually interesting. Also here we have the first appearance of Doc Samson, who would only grow in stature as a member of the Hulk cast in years to come.

Extras include two annual covers, seven pages of original art from Trimpe and Dick Ayers, and a discussion about the changes to a controversial cover featuring Richard Nixon. It's a fine collection of issues that are... well, just fine, but that will be of great interest for people delving into the Hulk's entire history.
