I found this VERY difficult to learn to use. I never did figure how to use properly. My brother in law never figured it out either. Maybe too many options for us. I like SIMPLE. I put it back in the box and haven't tried to use it since. For you young people, this is probably the cat's meow. It certainly is a lot of device.
Can't see turn on in the dark, needs illuminated indicator when turning on or loading. No map detail on screen without topo card added for a hundred more dollars. I feel really mad about that! Realized after receiving this, that updates, loading data, etc seem to be driven by windows or apple. Garman needs to be aware of a new technology called "android" who has laptops or PCs anymore? I want this garmin unit to interface with my samsung tablet and phone , including blutooth where everything updates in auto.
The GPS works great, it's a bit hard to understand as I found the instructions to be very vague. I had to look on line just to find the right memory card. This GPS take no greater then 32 GB. Also if you need reading glasses you will have a harder time using the GPS as the screen is very small. I got a used one which contributed to me buying it.
I have been enjoying this gps for just over a month now... recently, it has started to freeze up randomly while in use. Really frustrating and I am hoping it doesn't freeze in the middle of a hike and end up putting me in the middle of no where. I guess the only way to avoid such a mishap would be to keep an eye on the gps instead of just leaving it in my pocket or backpack, which was the original idea for it.
The 30X isn't a bad GPS unit. It's just very slow to redraw the screen. This killed it for me. So I sent it back and picked up the GPSMAP 64S. Much faster performance! That's the one to get. Though the 30X has better battery life due to its slower computer processor.
I admit that I didn't have time to learn this device before going on a once-in-a-lifetime trip, but while recording a track, this device ran out of the internal 4GB storage by producing an incomplete .tmp file, and then kept acting normal, as if it's keeping recording the tracks, with no indication whatsoever that it quit doing so. It also made no use of a 4GB MicroSD I popped in before the trip. I ran tracking at the "most frequent" sampling rate, which probably contributed to its running out of space. It looks like .gpx files device has generates are produced from a much fatter temporary file where positions are recorded even if your location has not changed. It looks like these large temporary files eat up space and the software has no recourse for the case when it runs out of space. It could be relatively easy to work around these issues by decreasing sampling rate and managing tracks, but I should not be hacking this $200 toy to make it work properly. It's built well and has pretty good UI and controls, but its failure to notify of the storage problem for days is not excusable.
The unit is small enough to fit in your pocket and that makes it convenient to carry. The menus are understandable but not always intuitive. However, with a little practice, the menu sequences become obvious. The unit seems durable but I am not sure how the joystick will hold up to long term use. My only real complaint is that there is no post-processing capability included with the unit and I had to find conversion software to process the GPS data for display in Google Earth.
Needs a better instruction manual! It's a good product but if you are not accustomed to using a GPS you will have a hard time setting this up and understanding even a fraction of what is on this thing. Make sure you have a newer computer when you start downloading maps, my computer is six years old and doesn't support the software for base camps very well. The maps that you buy from Garmin also take a very long time to download.
