Edgar Allan Poe, 'The Raven
First up I am very pleased to have two poems in this anthology that has a Edgar Allan Poe. The title is 'Evermore: Edgar Allan Poe Inspired Poetry". However, apart from 'The Raven' and 'Annabel Lee' I must admit that I am not very familiar with the poetry of Edgar Allan Poe, but what I do know is that Poe wrote in strict meter and rhyme. 'The Raven' for example follows the pattern ABCBBB in each of its stanzas, this what gives it an almost hypnotic effect, and creates the poem's creepy atmosphere.
Having said that, the reader may find it strange that most of the poems in this are free verse. The explanation for this might because most of the poets in this book are from the USA and Canada. In North America rhyming poetry is less fashionable than tircorn hats and silk stockings for men.
A Poe influence (particularly 'The Raven') can be detected in a few poems (not mine by the way), such as Des Mannay Manny's 'Ravens Revisted' and Lynn White's 'Nevermore. Nevermore is course the eponymous Raven's buzzword, and it pops up in few poems.
The appeal of such a collection will be limited, but I did enjoy it.
