This reads like one of Card's books for young people. However, it has a strong story line and this makes it suitable for all ages. The character at the centre of the story is having a hard time coping with the breakdown of his parent's marriage. When his builder father converts the family home into a duplex, one house containing two dwellings, he becomes angry at losing his bedroom. This feeling is lessened when he discovers that his new female classmate's family are the tenants of the other half of the house.

There's a lot in this story. While on the surface it is about young people with small, restricted, super powers, there is a lot more to the tale. It's about being a young person and relationships with the opposite sex. It's also about how a young person relates to their parents and their relationship. It's also about learning to take on responsibilities. In short it is about the transition from child to young adult. All this is package away in a good tale, and a good read, that is accessible to anyone of any age.

This is Orson Scott Card at his best. A fantasy element is used to hold the reader while introducing important real life issues. It is very readable. It does not preach. It simply asks the reader to look at events in a grown up manner. I rather wish that I had encountered a book like it when I was in my teens.

If Ender had micropowers....

Some parts of Duplex remind me of scenes in Ender’s Game. While perhaps not quite the same sustained intensity, there is still that shadow cast by Ender. Orson Scott Card’s children are always precocious, eerily adult, and fond of verbal sparring. Duplex is a coming-of-age story with action, adventure, and romance. The micropower stories allow us to enjoy Card’s skill in creating believable stories and worlds with child protagonists without falling into the darkness of his later stories of Bean and Ender. Very much worth the read.

OSC is one of my favorite authors. I have read and LOVED all the Ender books and spin offs and LOVED the Alvin series and the Past watch books and others too. This one - not at all. It wasn’t terrible - but it was close. The books premise was a bit silly and the plot was pedestrian. I kept waiting for the book to get good. It never happened. I will continue to read everything he writes - but I hope this is an outlier and not the new normal.

Book number two of a two book young adult paranormal fantasy series. I read the well printed and well bound hardback published by Blackstone Publishing in 2021.

Ryan's dad and mom are split up so his dad converted their home into a duplex to earn more money. His dad rented the open side to a family from Slovenia with a teenage daughter, Bojana Horvat, also known as Bizzy.

Ryan has a micropower and Bizzy has a micropower. Together, they use their powers to save each other and to save others.

I enjoyed this sequel to the Micropowers series, although I was very confused at the beginning because … I had forgotten there was a series. Didn’t I read this already; a boy and a girl become friends and eventually discover GRUT? There’s no obvious relation to the series until halfway(?) through the story. Nevertheless it was an interesting and enjoyable addition to that universe and I sure I’ll read any additions.
