I bought this to replace my steam controller, so the bar was set pretty low. As a controller for a lot of things, it does work very well. Everything feels nice and tight and accurate. That said, I have had more issues with this controller compared to the steam controller when playing games on the computer. Little glitches and hiccups, desyncs, that kind of thing. Not every day common, but a couple times a month common at least.
The battery also drains wicked fast compared to what I am used to. I could throw some batteries in my steam controller and it would last for weeks. This controller lasts about 25% as long as the steam controller has when using the same kind of batteries and set up more or less the same.
All in all, the controller build quality feels very good and for certain games it is essentially to a really good gaming experience. That said however, it made me appreciate my steam controller more, and I use the XBOX controller far less than the steam controller.
Found it very expensive for what it is, I mean microsoft common when you know that you customers does not have other alternative! Let's talk about the battery life few hour of gaming, this controller is eating batteries every 2 days ! I would prefer an internal battery like the ps4 controller. Other than that, the quality and feeling are good !
On multiple Windows 10 PCs this controller did not work in a plug and play fashion as it should have.
I had to manually go to catalog.update.microsoft.com and search for the device ID and then select the correct package for amd64(64-bit). Once I had this downloaded I then needed to extract it before I could manually point the device to this new correct driver via device manager.
The Xbox one controller is amazing and I would recommend to any and everyone. The adapter is junk and only lasted 3 weeks. As always Amazon is great and willing to return BUT I don't want to be with out my controller. Tried to deal with Microsoft and they kept transferring until I was hung up on.
Buy the controller on its own and a good Bluetooth adapter. Or use it wired, micro USB cable not included.
This is the newer, smaller design, model number 4N7-00007 and ONLY works for Windows 10.
If you want to use this on Windows 7, Windows 8.1, or Windows 10, get the older, bigger design, model number CWT-00001. (https://www.amazon.ca/Microsoft-Controller-Wireless-Adapter-CWT-00001/dp/B01M5GG9I7/)
Wish I had known this sooner.... nothing about the way this is presented (old vs new) is clear. Why would they make the old one work with all 3 OS's and not the new one? Pretty annoying.
Other than that, with Prime I received it the next day, packaging all intact. Controller feels good and will still work with my xbox at least, I've got that going for me I guess.
It works... but I'm kind of disappointed I received the older larger Xbox Wireless Adapter for Windows, even though in the pictures and description show/state the 33% smaller one. I believe that the controller is an older version as well, maybe a refurb hard to tell.
This controller feels great to use and the sticks are nice, there is an important caveat though: About 1 in 10 of these controllers has a faulty A button, where A and only A sometimes doesn't respond to inputs. This means you will attempt to jump, open a door, etc.. and the controller just wont work. It crops up most when you haven't hit the button for a while. You can google "Xbox One Controller A Button" for further evidence, its widespread.
I ordered one that had this problem, same exact failings on PC on Steamlink and on console. I will try to return, waiting on a replacement now, and If this next one is busted, my review will go down considerably. Both from 2 different vendors, one Prime and one not. Pay close attention to the seller and their policy, since there is a fair chance you will need a replace/refund.
Further notes about design- I could not get the dongle to work on PC, despite frequently using this type of wireless tech and despite trying several online guides. A direct USB or Bluetooth connection will work just fine though. This controller does work well on Steamlink, but it seems to short out when directly plugged into the Steamlink's port, I recommend you connect it with Bluetooth and USB power the controller from another source (Like a USB powerstrip, unless you want to rely solely on *alot* of batteries.). Also, that Xbox light is bright af! I ended up putting a round glow-n-the-dark sticker over it to dull it down some, which actually made the effect look amazing.
All in all I wish I could recommend this controller highly, these are some of the smoothest sticks I've every seen and I aim well with them. If it wasn't for that A button, which is almost certainly a manufacturing/design flaw, this would be the best controller possible for PC or Steamlink play.
