This controller feels nicer than my original Xbox 360 controllers, but that's about where the good parts of this controller ends. I'm using this controller to game on my Windows 10 PC.
Every 5-10 minutes, the controller will stop responding to input. Some of the time the white center Xbox button with the LED light will flash a few times as it reconnects for 30 seconds, then you can get back to playing. The rest of the time, you have to power cycle the controller by holding the white center button for 5 seconds to turn it off, then hold it again to turn it back on. This is REALLY annoying during even just an hour of gaming. If you're gaming for a couple hours, expect to do this a good 10-20 times a session, often during an action sequence when you absolutely NEED the controller to be responding.
For those wondering, yes, I've changed batteries, installed latest drivers, checked for updates, ensured that the USB dongle is less than 5 feet away from the controller, yada, yada, yada. I'm a software developer, I know computers at least half decent. If I can't get this thing working with my googling and other troubleshooting, I hate to think how the average person is feeling dealing with this nonsense.
I'm posting this out here to let others know about the flakiness of the new controllers. I'm contacting Microsoft to get this resolved and going back to my old Xbox 360 wireless controllers for the time being.
I bought this to replace my steam controller, so the bar was set pretty low. As a controller for a lot of things, it does work very well. Everything feels nice and tight and accurate. That said, I have had more issues with this controller compared to the steam controller when playing games on the computer. Little glitches and hiccups, desyncs, that kind of thing. Not every day common, but a couple times a month common at least.
The battery also drains wicked fast compared to what I am used to. I could throw some batteries in my steam controller and it would last for weeks. This controller lasts about 25% as long as the steam controller has when using the same kind of batteries and set up more or less the same.
All in all, the controller build quality feels very good and for certain games it is essentially to a really good gaming experience. That said however, it made me appreciate my steam controller more, and I use the XBOX controller far less than the steam controller.
Found it very expensive for what it is, I mean microsoft common when you know that you customers does not have other alternative! Let's talk about the battery life few hour of gaming, this controller is eating batteries every 2 days ! I would prefer an internal battery like the ps4 controller. Other than that, the quality and feeling are good !
On multiple Windows 10 PCs this controller did not work in a plug and play fashion as it should have.
I had to manually go to catalog.update.microsoft.com and search for the device ID and then select the correct package for amd64(64-bit). Once I had this downloaded I then needed to extract it before I could manually point the device to this new correct driver via device manager.
The Xbox one controller is amazing and I would recommend to any and everyone. The adapter is junk and only lasted 3 weeks. As always Amazon is great and willing to return BUT I don't want to be with out my controller. Tried to deal with Microsoft and they kept transferring until I was hung up on.
Buy the controller on its own and a good Bluetooth adapter. Or use it wired, micro USB cable not included.
Build quality is really bad compared to the old 360 Controllers. RB stopped working consistently about two weeks in (lots of people have reported similar issues with the bumpers).
I decided to try plug in the controller and see about updating the drivers (maybe it was just software related?) but after plugging it in via USB it no longer turned on at all. It flat out won't work without a cord.
The only positive for me is that it died soon enough after purchasing that I could return through Amazon rather than deal with Microsoft Warranty.
After two months of barely using this thing, the USB Receiver crapped out and stopped working entirely. Not a driver error, not a Serial Bus error, not PC hardware error, the receiver just straight up died.
Also, the product description says it comes with a USB-C cable.... false. No cable. Overpriced to die in just two months. Get something better not this garbage.
I decided to 'upgrade' from my old 360 controller, and yet this does not feel like a full on upgrade. It is definitely a step sideways, with some pros as well as some cons.
The underside is comprised of two big pieces of plastic which join up where your middle finger contacts the plastic. The two pieces of plastic were slightly different elevations, and constantly cut into my right hand finger. This is terrible worksmanship and design, when compared to the 360 controller which is a single piece of plastic that is smooth against your skin. None of the buttons feel better (or significantly worse) than the 360 controller, and the thumbsticks ARE better on this model.
This is not a well engineered product, and it is a shame considering its the official microsoft controller.
