The plastic pipe is made of a very stiff plastic, which causes two problems. First, it makes the pipe all but impossible to slip on to the pump. Secondly, the pipe isn't the correct shape to properly discharge the waste oil into most containers. The solution to these defects is simple. Heat the stiff plastic end of the pipe with a heat gun or hair drier until it is pliable . The pipe will then stretch and easily slip on to the pump. Using the same technique, heat the whole length of the pipe and bend it into a more appropriate shape. After doing these things, I found the pump to be easy to use and efficient at pumping out the waste oil.
The pump really should come with a flexible rubber hose instead of the cheap stiff plastic one.
I bought with the some skepticism, but decided to give it a try to change the oil in my Mercruiser Mag350. It worked so well, I was shocked. As others have mentioned, the hose provided is very hard, stiff and short. Instead of using that, I installed some longer, more flexible hose to reach to empty gallon jugs. The pump easily screws onto the dipstick tube and a couple quick pumps and you are pumping oil. I didnt get any siphon action because the oil pan was lower than the output, but it was still quick and easy. Probably 90 seconds to pump warm engine oil out.
I have a 1994 Cobalt with Volvo Penta 5.7 GI. The drain plug on this engine is in the worst place. I would have to drain it straight into the hull and out the hole in the bottom. This pump directly attaches to the dipstick port and you can pump out the oil cleanly into a canister. It takes a little bit - around 15min, but the dipstick port is easily accessible, the procedure is clean without messes and if you only have to do it once a year this is by far the way to go. The pump looks like it's good quality and will be a good tool over the years.
Pump is OK. Attaches to dipstick on my 8.2L Merc's. Takes about 5 min of pumping for each engine. I'd get a better pump if oil changes were more frequent.
Beware...the plunger arm is screwed into stopper in the cylinder. If you keep twisting the plunger, the arm will detach from the plunger inside the cylinder. All you have to do is push the arm all the way into the cylinder and screw clockwise to tighten it.
I thought mine broke and then realized this point messing around with it in my frustration.
The pump itself is great, many times fewer strokes than I had anticipated to change my oil. Other buyers should be aware that the included hose would never fit the pump outlet - too small & too stiff. And flexing the hose a little if you ever got it on would snap the pump outlet, so just toss it. I used a short section from an old garden hose (5/8", I think), which works great for me. The reason I chose this over another marine engine oil change pump is because I wanted it faster than the 2 weeks my other option offered. I paid at least $10 more for that, but it was my choice. If you plan ahead, that won't be a problem. Pro tip - get the engine hot first. Yes, "everybody knows that". But I needed to pump off a half quart later because it was overfilled. So, from experience, pumping 75F oil is a lot harder than pumping 170F oil. (No suprise.)
I looked all over the internet at oil pumping equipment for changing the oil in my Volvo Penta 4.3GL. This is a fabulous solution. It's affordable, build very well and does its job with a few dozen pumps. Run on paddles for about 5 minutes and get a used oil container ready. I used an old cat litter pail and routed the still plastic tube into it. You could easily rig up a longer vinyl tube if you like with a hose clamp. Leave it open and on its side to drain and it will last many years.
I was hopeful but severally disappointed. While this doe work, it doesn’t work well. Jabsco says 40 pumps per quart. It more like 400 it seems. Also, the hose may as well be PVC pipe. It’s stiff as a board. I had to use a heat gun to soften the hose to get it on the pump. If it were used in cold weather, you’d be cussing up a storm. To top it off, Jabsco actually makes longer/larger version of these that draw more. Had I known, I’d have never bought this model. Do your research and get the bigger model.
