The other con is that a serious game player can complete every level of this game in a few days. I am satisfied with it because my son who is 5 and who is a novice, can not and so it is challenging to him, but I am an adult and also a novice to the dsi game system and I 'read' this game in a week.
I love the graphics. I like the story line and the fact that there is a different villain from the Ultimate Alien season of the show to fight against at the end of each level. I like the originality of the different levels. When it comes to replay factor, I would give it an 6 out of 10, but that is from an adult perspective. A child might replay this till it falls apart from over-use.
Again, if I was a pro I would not buy this for myself, and I definitely would not buy it for any one under age five.
Credit the production team for keeping Ben 10 fresh and new over the past four years. There's always a new alien form for Ben 10 to change into and the new Ultimatrix, a gauntlet-like version of the old Omnitrix, not only gives him access to all of his original powers and abilities, but also allows him to evolve his alien forms into even stronger and even more powerful versions (called "ultimate forms").
The biggest disappointment in Ben 10: Ultimate Alien is that you don't get to play as in an alien's ultimate form, despite the game title. The ultimate form is simply as super-attack that pops up on the screen, leaving the regular alien form behind. My sons felt cheated by this presentation.
This game addresses the lack of unlockables on the previous Ben 10 game. You can unlock improved speed, strength, defense and special attacks as part of a new upgrade system. However, even with these improvements, my sons finished the game over a weekend and haven't shown much interest in playing it over again.
My sons awarded a five-star rating to Ben 10 Protector of the Earth , the original Ben 10 game released on the DS in 2007. They awarded four stars to the follow-up game Ben 10 Alien Force (released in 2008) because it proved to be much less challenging than the first game. They were less forgiving of the third Ben 10 game, Ben 10 Alien Force Vilgax Attacks (released in 2009), awarding it only two stars for its short gameplay and clumsy controls.
Looking back, I realize I'm the only Amazon reviewer of all four Ben 10 games on the DS. That isn't by choice but rather thanks to two Ben 10 fanatics, my 8-year old and 6-year old sons. My sons have since sold back all three of the previous Ben 10 titles. None of them had the replay-ability of DS games like Mario Kart DS or Animal Crossing: Wild World . That's important to note if you are on a tight budget. The Ben 10 games are about as long lasting as chewing gum.
Rating: Three stars.
