There are storylines so regarded that they are mentioned in every discussion of a comicbook's history, and this latest Avengers Epic contains one of the most famous of them. Containing material from 1970-1972, it presents Marvel's flagship team book during the period where writer Roy Thomas had really got a handle on what he wanted to do with the comic, and artist John Buscema was at the height of his heroic powers.
Between them, they launch the team, who at the time had one of their best ever membership rosters, into battles with corrupt businessman Cornelius Van Lunt and the Grim Reaper's fearsome Lethal Legion, allies them with native American hero Red Wolf, and splits the women of the team off into the Valkyrie's group of Lady Liberators. We also get a trip to the parallel dimension of the Squadron Supreme and finally learn of the expanded origin of the Black Panther.
It's all great stuff, especially under the facile pencil of my favourite Marvel artist, but the real draw in this book is the Kree-Skrull War, a saga over nine issues (fairly staggering at the time) that really does still feel special the best part of fifty years later. Stan Lee and his artist co-creators had baked the crossover aspect of the Marvel Universe into the books from the start of the modern age, but this star-spanning tale really does take that to another level as it brings in the aforementioned alien races, cosmic hero Captain Marvel, Annihilus and the Negative Zone, the Fantastic Four and the Inhumans. It suddenly feels as if every previous Marvel comic has been building to this, and makes the reader feel that every bit of continuity had the potential to become important. Along the way, every Avenger gets a chance to shine, and if the ending is perhaps a little pat, the journey to get to it was worth every page.
Extras include two annual covers, house ads, a self-portrait and a page of original art by Buscema, seventeen pages of original Neal Adams art, the covers and extra pages from the 1983 reprints of the Kree-Skrull War and two covers from previous trade reprints. It's a great period of the Avengers, with a central storyline that really does deserve the hype.
